So much for no higher taxes of

any kind for 95% of the American people.  This is just going to kill the people who are already struggling to make ends meet.  Not to mention the high prices that will come if they get cap and trade passed.  Why don't people in Washington get this?  All they talk about are the sacrifices that we are all going to have to make and they do nothing but keep spending.  Where is the sacrifice on their end, huh?  We need to fix this economy and stop the constant spending by our government.

I'm so sick and tired of this.  I work to make money and they are just going to take more and more of what I earn.  I've always been responsible with my money and have excellent credit but how I am going to continue to make ends meet if this keeps up?  It is pretty sad when responsible people are scared this will bring them down as well.  I guess the rich will just have to pay for everything because there won't be a middle class left the rate things are going.

So you think you're exempt from higher taxes?
nm
yeah, of higher taxes for all -kind of change we can

How is giving "tax cuts" to people not paying taxes

Palin, the candidate that just keeps giving and giving...

My guess is much higher.
I would say at least 100; 25 who can read, another 25 who can comprehend what they read; another 25 to articulate what the ones with reading comprehension can understand and try to express, and another 25 to type and proof, at least.
Sigh. They pay a higher percentage because they
thousands of times more wealth than each average Joe (and I DO NOT mean the plumber). We have a progressive tax system here, American as apple pie, and Obama only wants to adjust the rate back to where it was were 8 years ago....no socialist subversion in that. We all managed to survive the economic boom of the 90s, after all.

Furthermore, before pronoucing any judgements on this issue, check out the disparities in the (here comes that CAPITALIST phrase again) distibution of wealth in the US. If you do not want to research this yourself, just say so and I will post that information for the UMPTEENTH time.

Now, before you go off, Wikipedia is not the Communist Manifesto. Go to the link and scroll down a little better than halfway and read the section on the United States. If you are in the middle class, the information there will make your blood boil.

too many people = higher premiums?!
Wow, not that I want to spend all week talking about insurance, but I'm really amazed by things I'm hearing. The whole point of insurance is to lower your individual cost by adding in lots and lots of people. If you and I are the only ones who have insurance, and you have a heart attack, I'm effectively paying half your bill, right? But if we could average that bill over millions and millions of people, it'd be much easier to bear.

The ideal situation, then, would be for everybody in the country to have insurance, so we could average the costs over 300 million people. (This would also lead to a better ability to negotiate drug prices, and encourage hospitals not to spend millions on useless equipment like surgical robots that drive the costs skyward.)

Read Obama's plan, or Baucus', or Kennedy's, or Wyden's, and you'll find that people who can't afford even those new low premiums, are helped out with subsidies, NOT FINED. It's far, far cheaper to help subsidize poor people's premiums, than it is to have them show up to the ER for every cold and flu symptom, you know? Not to mention that they'll then be able to get preventative care, and not so many of them will wind up with horribly costly illnesses down the road, diabetes, heart disease, etc.

Affordable health care isn't just an easy fix, it's a moral one. And it has been tried a million times--I think Truman was actually the first president to suggest it. But you and I don't have the kind of lobbying money that big pharma has, that the doctors have, that every other player has, and they have worked for *decades* to keep Americans from getting the healthcare system they deserve.
you think only 3 have been tortured, I think the number is much higher....sm
That might be the reason that the former administration wanted to keep them forever imprisoned, so that they cannot talk!
Anywhere in Scandinavia. Higher standard of living.

Combined income or small business making 120,000 or higher
will be taxed big time instead of the 250,000.  It could down lower to where anyone making 42,000 or higher will be taxed big time.  He keeps changing his mind, but we will for sure see if he wins.
Posible new "boon" to the economy? Higher minimum wages??.....PSM
I was just thinking, we did a lot of discussion yesterday about welfare reform, the bloated welfare roles that we have now, and how to end it.  How about passing a DECENT, HONEST, REALISTIC minimum wage act that is based on the present economy, the proposed future economay, and will make it more profitable for an American to get a fair-paying job on which he can feed his family, pay his REASONABLE mortgage, pay his bills, etc., instead of having the minimum wage so low that it is actually more profitable for many families to say on welfare, medicaide, and food stamps, along with subsidised housing AND NOT have to juggle three low-paying jobs to do it?  Don't you think that if American workers felt they were more faily paid, were being compensated fairly for their efforts, and would bring home enough wages each week to live within comfortable means, that more and more folk would jump off the roles and into a job (of course, we first need the part of the stimulus package to address keeping our companies solvent and employing).  Just a thought!!!
My only interest in
posting this was BECAUSE it came from someone on the ground in Iraq, an American soldier. I also said the war seems to affect ONLY those directly involved and you and your husband and family fall into that category. Most Americans do not. I'm sorry you see this as leftist arrogance, but it is how I feel. I did not feel this way about Bush 41 either (this is in reference to Clinton and Somalia) and I think that is because both of them had a plan, listened to those more knowledgeable, had a plan B and C, as the military is wont and got in and got out. It is the arrogance of this administration that angers the left so. At this point Iraq is not ours to win or lose; it is theirs - the Iraqis - and if we had done in the beginning, as recommended by THE MILITARY who know a bit more than the CEOs in office, we would probably be out of there. The US cut a deal with the Ba'athists to calm Anbar province which was totally out of control a few weeks ago and it worked. As I understand it the Ba'athists, altho the old Iraqi army, are not Sunni or Shi'ite bound. They are more like mercenaries than an I-do-not-know-how-many-thousand-year-religious-land conflict that has and will probably go on forever between the Sunnis and Shi'ites. If we had sent in more troops (recommended by military) and had gotten the Ba'athists to cooperate with us earlier; then maybe we would be out of there or at least on our way out. The arrogance I see is the stubborn, petulant refusal of this administration to do anything differently ever, no matter what. Stubborness is not a foreign policy. My feeling also is that because **that is the way we have always done it** is not a reason to keep doing it that way (reference to flag lowering).

This is only one of a bunch of things he's rushing through so they can't be repaired easily once he's gone (IF he goes).

Here's part of it.  The rest of the article can be found at:  http://www.truthout.org/110708K

Washington - In the next few weeks, the Bush administration is expected to relax environmental-protection rules on power plants near national parks, uranium mining near the Grand Canyon and more mountaintop-removal coal mining in Appalachia.

The administration is widely expected to try to get some of the rules into final form by the week before Thanksgiving because, in some cases, there's a 60-day delay before new regulations take effect. And once the rules are in place, undoing them generally would be a more time-consuming job for the next Congress and administration.

Of interest, Iraq and oil

"The invasion of Iraq plays a crucial role in the agenda of the neoconservatives. Iraq has the second largest oil reserves in the world.  It could replace, in case of need, other producers such as Saudi Arabia, a fragile ally of the United States. The control of oil production and prices gives the United States potential power to pressure consumer states such as Russia, China, and many in Western Europe."

This is by the former French ambassador to Tunisia, now a journalist.  I guess I hadn't realized that Iraq was that oil-rich.

The unemployment numbers for May were recently released and are truly disheartening. More than 345,000 Americans lost their jobs last month and unemployment rocketed to 9.4% (the highest since August, 1983). Clearly, it is time for Congress to reduce or suspend most immigration. However, the Congressional leadership is pushing for a mass amnesty!

This push for Comprehensive Amnesty is happening because the White House is holding an immigration summit this week -- the purpose of which is to pave the way for various amnesties (AgJOBS, the DREAM Act, and comprehensive amnesty).

Please fax your Members of Congress and urge them to oppose any attempts by open borders and pro-illegal alien lawmakers to foist an amnesty on the American people. Any amnesty, no matter how small, would have a devastating impact on America's 14 million unemployed workers.

Click here to read a Los Angeles Times article on Congress' push for amnesty and President Obama's immigration summit.

It's part of the Annenberg Foundation (don't know anything about that group).  Anyway this seems to be a fairly nonpartisan website (even gives statistics backing that up).  It provides great coverage of the claims made by both candidates and where the truth actually lay.  Not surprisingly it appeared that overall Bush had a bigger problem with manipulating the truth than Kerry.

The site is not limited to just the candidates from the last election - I check it periodically out of general interest.  As I said, I want the truth, even if it's painful sometimes.

I have no interest in addressing your name calling, but
I will just say here that, once again, Peggy Noonan is spot-on. If you read the Conservative board with any regularity at all, it should come as no surprise that conservatives often disagree with GWB's spending; this is one of the two principal areas of disagreement that have been discussed over the past couple of years on the board. The other is border control.

At present, as Ms. Noonan says, he is better than the last alternative. He's also the only game in town as of right now, but he does need to be cautious about being too laissez-faire about alienating the conservative base.

IMHO, unless the Republicans come up with a candidate who is truly a fiscal conservative and is willing to prioritize and cut spending, he is setting Republicans up for another 1992 - a third party candidate siphoning off conservative votes and handing the election to the Democrats. Also IMHO (this will come as no surprise), that would not be a good thing.

Back to the Conservative board....sorry to intrude here, but I can't resist Peggy Noonan.
Hmm...in the interest of full disclosure...

Don't care where Waldo is, but would like to know where the thesis is...and also the rest of the missing Columbia records.  If people are so concerned about where what the #2 on the other ticket did in Wasilla, Alaska, and how many colleges she went to, I would like to know what the #1 on the Democratic ticket was doing during his Columbia years.  After all...he IS running for the #1 slot.

You must be talking about our shared interest
resource bases, pride in our candidate, his vision for America and our confidence he will be the "chosen one" come November.
Lack of interest was the point.
Focks Noise is rarely relevant. I am retired and as grown as I can get. Resorting to name calling when someone doesn't agree with you does not exactly imply a great deal of maturity.
As long as you pay them with penalty interest
Just like he did.
Geitner did pay all interest and penalties
Geitner did not pay all his interest and penalties...the IRS forgave the interest and penalties for 2003 and 2004.  They wouldn't do that for me or you.

I don't think that we're losing interest...(sm)

The govt in Iran has really been cracking down on communications.  From what I understand (from news last night) they are confiscating computers, cell phones, etc.  Because of this, there just simply isn't as much news coming out of Iran.

From some acconts from yesterday it has been said that they started yielding axes (of all things) along with the clubs and tear gas, and threw at least one protester off a bridge.

However, there are still postings on YouTube daily of the brutality going on.

They can reduce the interest to normal levels...
and wipe out whatever they are in arrears, and readjust payments. There is NO NEED to reduce principal. That is just another gimme. And if they can't make the payments on reduced interest they will lose the house ANYWAY. I do not understand this penchant for rewarding irresponsibility ... on the part of the buyers AND the lenders AND the government officials who encouraged the doofus process....can we all say FRANK and DODD???
I saw no interest in Democrats uniting behind Bush....
and why on earth would I change my concern about Obama just because he won the election??

I cannot trust a man who says one thing to one person and something else to another. He goes to Israel and tells the Palestinians that Israel should just give the country back. Then he meets with Israelis and backs off of it. He tells one thing to Pennsylvanians and other thing to San franciscans ABOUT Pennsylvanians. He distances himself from Richard Daley and then brings a crony onto staff. Sorry, but I have no interest in backing someone I do not trust. What difference does it make? Nothing I say matters anyway; so just let me have my say and go on about your business aligning yourself behind O the adored. Don't even bother to act like if the election had gone the other way you would be aligning yourself behind McCain and Palin. a bit hypocritical aren't we? lol.
Just in the interest of full disclosure, other members of the Carlyle Group....

They include among others, John Major, former British Prime Minister; Fidel Ramos, former Philippines President; Park Tae Joon, former South Korean Prime Minister; Saudi Prince Al-Walid; Colin Powell, former Secretary of State; James Baker III, former Secretary of State; Caspar Weinberger, former Defense Secretary; Richard Darman, former White House Budget Director; the billionaire George Soros, and even some bin Laden family members. You can add Alice Albright, daughter of Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State; Arthur Lewitt, former SEC head; William Kennard, former head of the FCC, to this list. Finally, add in the Europeans: Karl Otto Poehl, former Bundesbank president; the now-deceased Henri Martre, who was president of Aerospatiale; and Etienne Davignon, former president of the Belgian Generale Holding Company.

I never knew George Soros was a member. I never bothered to check. Now THAT is interesting.

Also, in the interest of putting it all out there...the bin Laden family disowned Osama years before 9-11.

what are you giving up?
What are some things that you and/or your family are giving up due to the high price of gas and now the rise in food prices?  My family - just me and my husband now - buy 2 large packs of water at Sam's every 2 weeks and drink this, sometimes getting some crystal light or something to put in it.  We eat a meal once a week and that's it.  Needless to say - we are both losing weight.  But to fill up his truck - that's $100 a week - even though he only works 3 days a week now - and I work at home - so I only go out twice a month - to a dr. appointment and then the second time to get the water.
I'm giving up
It is so hard to have a positive outlook on society anymore. I think I should have been born about 100 years ago. This country has no more morals, all people care about is political correctness and not stepping on anyone's toes. The God of this nation has been pushed out, and people want to know why kids are shooting each other. We have become so pompous we think we can take care of ourselves. I want to live in a time when women respected their bodies and didn't just give it up to anyone. Where rapist were few and far between because they would be hanged if caught. They couldn't wiggle their way out of the judicial system on a technicality. Where we didn't need welfare because neighbor helped neighbor and everyone worked hard and worked together. Where there wasn't an obesity problem because kids played outside from after school until "the street lamp came on". Where people knew God and had a relationship with him. Where "love thy neighbor" was not just a commandment, but an action.

At 22 years old, I wonder if there will be an USA when I'm 40? Is it possible for our nation to survive at the rapid rate of decline we are experiencing for 18 more years? I used to pray to Jesus to wait to come, knowing it was selfish, because I knew so many people who didn't know his love and were not saved, including my own parents, and it killed me to think that we may be separated eternally because of that. Now I just can't help but to pray that He comes soon. All these movies about a post apocalyptic United States don't seem so far fetched now, minus all the zombies that is. We have to wake up. We need to fall to our knees and beg God for forgiveness and beg him to come back to our nation. If you don't believe in Him or want to scoff at me for saying this, I am so sorry. I am so sorry that you do not know the love of Christ. I just hope you get to know Him before it's to late.

God help us.

You are giving her credit for something
she will NEVER do.   She will never unite the party.  She will only go on and on and on until it is impossible for a democrat to win this year, making McCain the president.  All she wants is to be president, and if Obama gets in there, she will have to wait until 2016 when she'll be going on age 68.  She doesn't care about the country or the democratic party.  All she cares about is power, not about anything but HER and Bill.  Sad, but the truth.
Um, excuse me, since when did giving

intelligent, well thought-out replies and giving one's opinion constitute bullying?

Gimme a break.  Sam has every right to be here and she brings a lot to this board.  Maybe if those who bash follow her lead in effective posting, the atmosphere here would be shall I say more of a good debate than a circus?

No, he's just giving them HOPE. Something that

Get used to it. She's the story that just keeps on giving
there will be plenty more where that comes from.
Why are you being so mean to everyone giving the O in Obama a bad name!

I am giving him a chance and I
know that this isn't a quick fix.  I'm realistic enough to know Obama cannot wave a magic wand and make this all go away.  I'm just saying that for a man who hasnt' been pres for a whole week......he has made a lot of promises already with 2 already broken.  I'm not trying to get a lynching mob together.  I just want to stay informed of what my president and the government is doing because I refuse to just assume they are making the right decisions.  Holy crap people.....seriously!  Xanax....try some.
You mean too many with brains giving in.
There is a big difference between intelligence and lack of cahones.

AIG - the gift that keeps on giving. sm
Beginning with the first bailout under the Bush administration, and accelerating apace (which one wouldn't have thought possible) under Obama, the ineptitude in dealing with every aspect of the current economic problems is simpy staggering.

This ineptitude includes both Presidents, both Treasury secretaries, the man who was/is Fed chairman under both Presidents(Bernanke), Congress, and regulatory agencies such as the SEC and FDIC.

Consider this interesting little fact: It has taken six months for the Ethics Committee to investigate some fairly simple charges of financial misconduct by Charlie Rangel, but Congress can pass three major bills, two of which were so large they couldn't be read by anyone, in a matter of a few days (and in the case of the third bill which unconstitutionally taxes AIG bonuses, in just one day).

My dear friends, this country is in trouble. The government is behaving impulsively and has, in my long life, never before been in such a state of disarray. Our response to the financial crisis is beginning to look like nothing so exquisitely as a Chinese fire drill.

We are apparently determined to prove to the world that we're going to make a pig's breakfast out of this crisis, but hey...at least we did it fast!

Impulsive and reckless government - THAT is what the American people (and the world) are seeing, and THAT is what I believe is beginning to frighten us even more than the economic crisis itself.
