what Obama is proposing is NOT a one-time deal. It will be part of the tax code. BIG difference.

Stimulus checks

How many of you enjoyed your Stimulus Checks?  I for one loved mine.  Think back to what you did with that check?  Maybe you paid some bills, bought that CD you have been wanting, maybe a night out with your family to a nice restaurant or even Pizza Hut.  A lot of us were able to buy new clothes for our children.

Admit it, it was worth going to the mailbox for.  I looked forward to the mail for once.

Senator Obama has pushed for more Stimulus checks immediately for the American people.  But who do you think veto'd it?  President Bush did.  Senator McCain has sided with President Bush 90% of the time.  Believe me, you won't be going to the mailbox to find anymore Stimulus Checks in there if you elect John McCain on November 4, 2008.

Stimulus checks

I'm ill, have no health insurance, and if we get another stimulus check, I'll be able to go see the doctor again.  (I've been there twice:  When I received my income tax refund and when I received the first stimulus check.)

The doctor is pretty far away, and I need to rent a car (with a $250.00 deposit) since my daughter's car is very old and probably wouldn't make the trip.  (My car was repossessed when I couldn't afford the payments any more due to being in the hospital so often.)

I hope we get another stimulus check so I can see the cystic fibrosis specialist again.  In the meantime, I'm fortunate to have found a good doctor for low-income people in my town.

the problem is that the stimulus checks are not...
"compliments of Obama." He is not footing the bill. The tax payers are, one way or another. There is no such thing as a free lunch.
Feds paying $millions in stimulus checks

Next time you make some colossal blunder at work, here's your excuse:  "I was rushed".  Apparently, that's good enough for the feds, who have sent around 10,000 checks to dead people...some of whom were never even in the Social Security system.  Wonder where they're getting the names?

Of course, we knew that the fraud, abuse and waste would be gargantuan since the government has never been able to handle our money without fraud, waste and abuse.

I used the last economic stimulus check
It was costing me about $25 in quarters every time I went to the laudromat. Not to mention gasoline and time spent not typing. I used the $600 to buy myself a portable washing machine (attaches to sink in kitchen when in use) and a portable drier. They use very little electricity. Washer uses very little water (good thing, now that we're in a major drought), and only a teaspoon of detergent per load. So it's nice to no longer have to pay at the pump and at the 'mat!

Lots of ways to cut down costs and giving our money to the government in taxes. I now pay all my bills online. Costs me nothing. Saves me a stamp (the price of which is going up AGAIN this spring), and the use of a check that i had to pay to have printed.

If they want to send me another $400, I'm sure not gonna complain. As a single renter with no kids, I have ZERO tax breaks. Last year, the I overpaid and Calif. OWED me $300. Then they very conveniently 're-figured' my taxes, and sent me a letter saying I actually made LESS MONEY than I had put on my return, and by their calculations, they didn't owe me anything. (???) If I made less money, but still overpaid the same amount in taxes, shouldn't they owe me MORE? Needless to say, if I owe them this year, they might just be getting a $300 IOU. They can spend their bailout money collecting it from me.
I hope the next time he checks the tax
in office. LOL.
I hope the next time he checks the tax

And we don't have time to spare for total economic collapse....nm

Sorry - not everybody got those checks -
You had to make a certain income to qualify for that rebate - I know because my boyfriend who is on workman's cmopensation could not qualify for it because his income for the year was too low.

If you did not make enough to have to file tax returns, you did not get the rebate.
There have to be checks and balances with everything though.
Otherwise you will have corruption, no matter how good the intent of the law is.
Identity checks?
How do we know who these "individual contributors from the internet" really were? Is there a way to positively determine their true identities? Sounds like we need to know about this. I would really like to know if it is possible to confirm their true identities and where this cash is coming from.
Rebate checks
I'm sure Bush has given us a bunch of ideas on what to "spend" the rebate on.  I'm sure he would like more people to use if for gas (he is an "oil" man after all).  I'm using mine to help pay down some of my debt.  I told DH, why in the world aren't people on TV suggesting that citizens use the money to help pay off their debt, or put in a savings for the future.  All I keep hearing over and over is spend, spend, spend.  I told him I'm tired of whenever I get some extra cash in (whether from working OT, a b-day gift from a relative, or something like the rebate) it gets spent.  Yes I know that to stimulate the economy you need to spend, but when is enough enough.  I know of course there are certain things people need, but needing something is a lot different than wanting something and just buying something for the sake of spending.  I read somewhere once that if you spend it on gas it goes to the government/oil companies, if you spend it at Wal-Mart and other stores it goes to China, etc.  Unfortunately the way the economy is going right now it will help a lot of people with gas and food (2 necessities people can't do without), but is just sad that people will use it for that and then it will be gone.  As a side rant....does anyone get as furious as I do at these Visa companies that advertise spend, spend, spend.  The ones in particular is all these people charging a cup of coffee or some breakfast item on their charge card, then comes along a person with a check or cash and the music stops and they all look at him/her like they've spoiled all the fun.  I really think these credit card companies are getting out of hand when they are constantly bombarding us with commercials to spend (I am faster with the mute button than you can say jack rabbit).
Recheck on the fact checks
This whole dog and pony show was going on in 2000 and 2004 too. Righteous anger! God doesn't approve of you! I hate a hypocrite! Commie!! World is going to end if Democrat wins! No seriously, you will be cowering in your bathtub with your last shotgun shell!

The FACT is, people are sick of this kind of hysteria. That's why Obama is so popular. After all, the end-of-world crew is not only downright nasty and scary, look what the people they support have done.

They still want to harp on Clinton, ignoring the horrible truth of just how many Republican congresscritters were arrested and jailed, indicted and censored for totally deplorable, and in many instances, depraved behavior during the Bush administration. They ignore our heartbreaking loss of American rights, and lives during this last 8 years. They ignore the financial meltdown and the outright theft of our social security fund, and now another 840 billion for the thieves, and how many trillions can the Pentagon under Bush just not find? Totally ignore it. They continue to harp on a "liberal press" -- bwa ha ha ha! The news they love to hate admits it gets it marching orders in the morning from the White House. And now, the scariest, worst human being ever, the Ayers monster, is actually famous for blowing up a urinal in the basement of the Capitol Building. Oh. My. God.

Now what - you're willing to put a woman who has NO experience a hair's breadth away from the Presidency? The one the Kenyan witchdoctor laid on hands to advance the agenda of the Third Wave, a religious group who feels they are the ones approved by God to take over America and impose its peculiar notion of Bible believing on all of us? And her husband, who is a charter member of a group in Alaska which unabashedly states it HATES America now and wants to secede? These people are now, they are real, and they are want to be your leaders.

Only by making up the most outlandish lies and propaganda (and crossing fingers that the "liberal press" doesn't blow the cover on their candidates' backgrounds too soon)can they even hope to smear "that one" sufficiently to sway the election.

The real decider for everyone of good faith, decent morals, and some kind of feeling for their fellow human beings, should be to simply look at how some people supporting the McC/SP ticket behave. Monkey dolls. Teaching children to shout the "n" word and jump and hoot like monkeys while the news camera watches, and God-fearing grandmother giggles. No, not just a few. Every single one in line. And then the fruitcake carving on her own cheek with a knife, claiming a big scary black man for Obama did it. Oh yeah, field rep for Republican National Committee, and the story grabbed and pushed immediately by McC's PA communications director. It's disgusting. And considering what they did to all of us in 2000 and 2004, are we really ready to believe there is any good judgment going on in what's left of the Republican ranks?

Just take a look at one of the Obama rallies and get a sense of the totally different atmosphere there, and ask yourself what kind of attitude you'd rather live with day in and day out. We already know what hatefulness, deception, and too much God-told-me-to-do-it in government can do to us and the world. Time to give it a rest, already. Anger, bile, threats, fantasies, foot-stomping, race-baiting, and rewriting the dictionary and the Bible isn't what this American wants. IMHO no American should want that.

Sam, I hate to tell you, but those checks already go out every year -
my sister does not pay a penny in income tax ever - they don't even hold anything out of her check during the year - and then she still gets $5000 to $6000 a year back from the government. So how do you think this is something new?

Don't agree. His economic plan will...
kill what economy is left. How do you give 95% of the country a tax cut when nowhere near that many even pay taxes? He will add a trillion or more to the deficit with all his plans...and how is he going to pay for that with even less tax money coming in? Oh I forgot...he is going to tax those making over $250,000. Which will kill jobs from small businesses who are S corporations (there are thousands of those) and file their income taxes personally and not as a business. Oh well. That's just what they get for being successful...they lose their business or have to downsize. Thank you so much, Mr. Obama. That will put even more people in the lower class because of job losses. If ANYone is going to divide into rich and lower class and no in between, it is Obama.
ACORN is definitely an economic issue.....
When thousands of fraudulent voters are going to the polls being counted as a vote, even though they do not truly exist in the first place, and Obama gets elected due to voter fraud, which he himself has paid to help enforce, how do you not see that as affecting our economy?

The majority of those dumb enough to help with the fraud are sadly enough easily led individuals who can't think for themselves and just do what they are told. They help to put a man in office who is going to tax them even more and they don't have the sense to know it! You don't think that affects your economy?

By the way, I am Independent.. McCain does't rock my boat either but Obama makes me want to puke!
We are broke now in an economic meltdown and
post-911 mindset. There is only one way out for those who look forward to what lays beyond that quagmire. I'll give you a hint. It does not involve a right turn.

Obama's economic plan
Number one, thanks for a thoughtful, relevant topic.

Number two, Obama's plan starts with rolling back the tax breaks for the wealthy that the Bush administration enacted to pre-Bush status and not make them permanent. A big step in the right direction would also be to tax the stratospheric earnings of equity-fund managers as income at 35% rather than as capital gains at 15% (they can surely afford it) and penalize them for moving their funds offshore.

Number three, all bets are off the table in light of the current GLOBAL economic crisis. The Obama administration will be so busy putting out fires they didn't start that it'll be difficult to enact any long-term or short-term economic plan. I know healthcare is a sore subject, but it's a potentially huge stimulus for middle-class folks, and huge stimuli are needed in times of severe GLOBAL recession.
Our economic situation is in no way as simple as that...wish it were!.....sm
What Mr. Rogers (love the name!) does not take into account in this equation is that in our particular case, which he did not forsee before his death, I believe, is much different. There are many hardworking, ethical, proud Americans who are very reluctantly receiving "handouts" from the government because there ARE NO JOBS to be had, the bills are due, the house is on the auction block, cannot afford medicine for a sick child, food for a starving family, heat and shelter....there are definitely people who abuse the system and use it as their piggy bank, but nowadays it can be me, you, your neighbor, anyone, no matter how many years you have worked hard, no matter how you have tried, we are in a crisis of almonst UNPRECEDENTED proportions, and still gettin worse. As for the rich, please do not get me started....TAKE from them???? don't you think that they are robbing all the American People and the System when they use all types of tax loopholes not to pay their fair share of taxes, when they move operations overseas for cheap labor and once again to avaid American taxes, when they pay lobbyists, who pay politicians, to look the other way in Congress on bills that would hurt big business but might HELP Amerfican workers???? Okay, I could go on, but I guess you get the idea how this poster feels about that particular quote. All for freedom, yes. But Free Enterprise has become the Evil Empire, as in Star Wars, (okay, hokey analogy!), and until we get that particular 2000 pound elephant out of the room and roasted, we are sunk as a nation.

What do you think would be the best course of action?
Well, O had the Economic Summit today and

the stock market is tanking again. It's down to -212. I have never seen the INDP as low as today at 7154. I think part of it is because they talked about nationalizing CitiGroup and Bank of America.

The deal is
just like the war, embryonic stell research has been so politicized that any kind of logical even-minded interpretation has flown right out the window.
I think it is a very big deal -
I don't think it would be a very big deal at all if she were the one paying for it and not the RNC - I don't think that clothes and makeup and haircuts is where most people think their donations are going when they donate their money...

and I don't think it sends a very good message at this time when people are trying to figure out how to buy gas and food and pay their utilities that they are paying $150,000 a month for clothes for her to wear..

and they will be donated to charitable causes? Give me a break!
Here's the deal...sm

1.  What makes it so profitable for foreign oil companies is the tax cuts provided to them by our government.  I won't even bother arguing who did that as its pretty obvious.

2.  The US Department of Energy last time I checked was a page or two before the "funnies."

3. Within the same time (or probably less) that we could drill for more oil here in the US (which wouldn't even come close to producing the quantity we use, and would not stand a chance on the market due to taxes that are already in place) we could implement other sources of energy.  In the course of this we would be providing renewable energy, decrease the horrific environmental impact on the environment, and create new jobs.

I also think this was a done deal
before the DNC. Remember how pelosi said SHE would take care of it (meaning the nominee) before the DNC? I had the feeling when HC conceded, it was because she was made a sweet deal by somebody.
OK, hon, this is the deal.
Hitler was an anti-Semite, granted. Using his Holocaust against the Jews as a historical parallel to illustrate the Palestinian Holocaust is not.

I do not wish to waste my time beating this dead horse with you, especially since your entire argument is founded on a false premise (a kind reference to what, in fact, is a filthy lie that seeks to dehumanize and trivialize genocidal slaughter). As long as you dismiss the occupation and "myth" and try to present a case that rewrites a distorted and warped history by assuming an exclusionary myopic perspective based on such an outrage (occupation denial), nothing you have to say holds any credibility and merits no further consideration or comment.

As long as the Israel perpetuates its own myth-based myth and believes it can justify state-sponsored terrorist apartheid occupation, it will doom itself to living in a parallel universe as a hated global pariah and its population will never see a moment of real peace or security.

that was quite a deal, eh? sm

Being conservative and pro-life (and never having given birth to boot), "freedom of speech" is something I want to see more often--certainly more than "racist!"  Talk about an over-played, lame-@ss word, ya know?

My only take on it is that, like Savage says, "I leave vengeance to God."  But you certainly have every right to say whatever you want, and I'm glad you said it without apology.

What really ticked me off was when Greg Jarrett on Fox used the term for pro-lifers as "extremists."  Excuse me?  I have every right to be pro-life and hold anyone I elect to that same mindset.  So that makes me an extremist?  It escapes me if I'm also considered a religious extremist.

That frosts me far more than about any of the lame remarks like GJs, etc.

McCains Top 10 economic crisis strategies.

10.   Blissful ignorance.  "The economy is not my strong suit."

 9.    Ridicule.  In an interview with the Washington Post on 07/9/2008, McCain advisor and national campaign general co-chair Senator Phil Gramm was defining McCain's plans to reform the U.S. economy.  Gramm explained the nation was not in a recession, stating, "You've heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession," and "We have sort of become a nation of whiners, you just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness, America in decline."  This would be the same Phil Gramm of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act which allowed commercial and investment banks to consolidate.  The legislation allowed Swiss Bank UBS to purchase several American institutions. Gramm later became a lobbyist for UBS, collecting over 750,000 USD in fees. UBS alone issues over 18 Billion USD in subprime mortgages.

 8.    Denial.  Black Monday, 09/15/2008.  John McCain:  "The fundamentals of our economy are still sound."  A worldwide stock market crash occurred as Lehman Brothers filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy and major investment bank Merrill Lynch was sold to Bank of America. Dow Jones Industrial Average lost more than 500 points, which is the biggest point drop (up to that point) since September 2001.  FTSE 100 dropped 212 points, and it was the biggest one-day percentage drop since January 21, 2008. Hong Kong, Japan and Korea stock market suspended that day due to public holiday, and they fell over 5% on the following day.   Two weeks later, we had a blacker Monday (09/29/2008) with a 777.68 point drop on the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

 7.    Political grandstanding.  Announcement of suspending his campaign to return to DC to "lead" Congress during economic bail-out negotiations.  This effort led to a defeat of the measure when the votes were cast.  Tried unsuccessfully to use the bailout as an excuse to postpone the presidential debate.

 6.    Flip-Flop.  Claims to support regulation.  Record says otherwise.

 5.    Incoherence.  Threatens to fire the chairman of the SEC if he were in office, even though the president does not have the authority to do so.

 4.    Theft of intellectual property.  Claiming previously existing mortgage buy-out proposal as his own.

 3.    Avoid / change the subject.  Greg Strimple, a McCain top advisor:  If we keep talking about the economy, we will lose."

 2.    Engage the politics of division, hate, fear mongering and cultural warfare with high-gear Obama smear campaign:  Ayers, ACORN, Farrakhan, Rev Jeremiah Wright, Barack Hussein Obama, etc.

 1.    McCain’s send message to voters is to stop whining about the economy and start focusing on attacking Obama.

Obama's economic crisis strategy...
Vote for the bailout....and nothing else.  Zip, zilch, nada.   Oh, except echo Harry Reid, and I quote:  "Nobody knows what to do about this."  Well, no **** Sherlock.  And STILL doesn't know.  Not a clue.  All he can say is middle class tax cuts and watch the thrills run up peoples' legs.  Would be funny if it weren't so.....
I prefer the definition of economic meltdown.
Ignore it and your campaign will go down in flames.
This post is about a coherent as JM's economic plan.

Perhaps you could enlighten us on the economic crisis suffered by
There is nothing in your chart or context that convincingly explains away the $559 billion dollar surplus Clinton left behind when his term came to an end.

Having said that, most Americans will agree that, when compared to the past 8 years, the middle class enjoyed a prosperous decade in the 90s. I was able to pay off my condo, so it has been foreclosure-proof under W.
Bush is the one that CAUSED this economic meltdown.

Barney Frank is to blame for the economic
BUT, Barney Frank is to blame for the corrupt government interference in mortgages and forcing banks to loan to people who by no means had any business trying to buy a home!!

Barney Frank has been in Congress since 1981. He has been the head of the Financial Services Committee and has been in charge of pushing all these government regulations onto banks.....

LETS CALL IT LIKE IT IS!!! He's a corrupt SOB and he needs to be kicked out of there! And now he dares to come across suddenly acting as if he is doing EVERYTHING he can to get the banking business flowing again! BULL! He's got them just where he wants them, indebted to the government. WHat happens next? Government run banks....... socialism......governments lending YOU, the citizen, monies, owning you, your family, and everything else in your life.......you need to do YOUR HOMEWORK!
Yes, a start, but economic studies have shown that these will be....sm
long-term down the road, and we are sinking way too fast. I do agree with the grener approach, I am a "tree hugger" from way back, participated in some of the "no Nuke" protest, and am an active member of Save The Bay, as our state is right on the bay, almost an island, and this has been for the past two decades. I guess I am eager for O to stop catering to politics, even though I know it comes with the job, roll up the sleeves, and really get to the meat and bones of the stimulus package, this country is HUNGRY! Did you catch Lisa Ling's National Geographic docomentary on the new homeless shown on Oprah? That truly made me cry, because a decade ago my family was close to being one of them, I cry for the children, "bleeding heart Democrat" that I am at heart!
