The tougher laws I see...
refer to dealers. So far as I can see, she wasn't dealing. She was a user. McCain, so far as I can see, has not wanted harsher penalties against users. He wanted tighter laws so not so much flows over the borders, he supported the death penalty for drug kingpins (like heads of cartels, etc). Again...John McCain, by himself, cannot make law. He can support it and vote for it, but if all the others in the legislature don't vote for it, it doesn't become law.
What he asked for tougher laws on I can't see that his wife did. I am sure Ted Kennedy would probably vote to keep the law that it is a felony to leave the scene of an injury accident too...but that didn't stop him from walking away from a bridge where a young woman was drowning in a submerged car. He managed to get himself out but could not be bothered to try to get her out. And he never did 1 second in jail for that. Which in my book is much worse than what Cindy McCain did.
That being said...The tougher laws McCain (and many others) supported was against dealers, not users. She didn't deal. She used and she stole from herself essentially (her foundation funded the charity) and yes, put pressure on the physicians associated with it to write her prescriptions. Because she was addicted and you know that someone who is addicted does not make good decisions.
The system is not perfect. No, she did not do any time for her crime. Many first-time user-offenders don't. On the other hand, they make deals with people a lot worse than Cindy McCain every day, turn them loose in order to get the bigger fish. That's not right either, but it happens every day. And contrary to what you might think, even people who forged prescriptions have gotten off, people a lot less affluent than Cindy McCain. For a whole lot of reasons.
And I say again...if you had all the means at your disposal the McCains have and it was your mother or sister who, while addicted, did things she would not normally do...if it was in your power to protect her from jail and get her the help she needed to get off the stuff, would you not do it?
Incidentally, McCain also, as part of his advocating harsher penalties for dealers, also advocated increase in federal spending for drug treatment programs: McCain indicates that federally sponsored drug education and drug treatment programs should be expanded. He says, “Work to expand public/private partnerships in support of such initiatives, and coordinate them with state and local efforts.”
Honestly, I can't find anything where he advocates harsher treatment of addicts and users. Only dealers.

The rest of Cindy McCain's drug story is....
She didn't just "do" drugs and go to rehab. Sam left out the middle part. Cindy, the beer heiress, McCain founded the American Voluntary Medical Team (AVMT)charity organization. This came in handy when her habit was upwards of 20 pills a day (Percocet and Vicodin). She used her considerable clout to force one of the AVMT MDs to write illegal prescription drugs. When that wasn't enough, she resorted to stealing them from her own foundation.
She then proceeded to fire the whistleblower who had found out about it, who then turned around and tipped of the Drug Enforcement Administration and a federal investigation ensued, which she ended up paying for since she was guilty. That's when she told her clueless husband, the senator, since the feds were on her tail.
Enter John McWayne. The family staged an intervention and the senator exercised HIS considerable clout and had Cindy enrolled in what is politely referred to as a "diversion program."
Here's how this works. You pay a "program fee," attend classes on how how to avoid future offenses, restitution to the victims and avoid situations that might encourage repeating the behavior. This would be the "slap on he wrist and make it go away" approach to law enforcement. It you fail to meet the requirements of the program, they proceed with full prosecution.
Now some people's "program fees" might be other's "bribe and hush money." This program is pretty much out of reach to the garden variety drug offender who is not heir to a fortune and married to a senator. Those folks do hard time.

I just saw Obama on TV just now, and he sounds rather childish about the whole thing, making accusations. Poor Obama.
He lost out on this one, and now he just plain looks bad. Not very presidential at all, I'm afraid.

Animal treatment
I have to agree with you there. While I am neither PETA nor vegetarian either, the treatment of animals in this country is horrible for the most part. And those of us who do try to help the homeless animals cannot get any assistance either. For example, some jerk in my area dumped out thirteen coon hounds in my area. Of thirteen, two made it to my house (i'm in the country). I counted five on the side of the road, dead, and i have no idea what happened to the others. The two that made it to my home were not neutered/spayed (one male, one female). When I called the humane society, they told me that I did not qualify for the low income spay/neuter program (I guess the 24,000 we made last year is not considered low income) and that I would have to pay about 200 each to get them spayed. When I told them I couldn't afford this and that these dogs were strays that I was just trying to help, they told me if I brought them there they would more than likely be euthanized!
In the end I ended up finding a man to take them who treats his hunting dogs like family members, and he called me awhile ago to tell me they were worth their weight in gold and he had them both fixed.
But not all animals end up that way. Most end up euthanized because some jerk owner decides he doesn't want them anymore and dumps them.
Sorry if I'm ranting, but with all this country has, can't we treat "man's best friend" a little better? Not just dogs, but all animals.

Iraq...constantly talking about Iraq and what was going on there and never having been there, though many other senators had. Anyone paying attention knows that. Obama's little trip to Germany was part and parcel of his "I am a citizen of the world" hoohah. Had nothing to do with what McCain said. And yes, he finally DID go to Iraq, and well he SHOULD. And he knows that the surge worked, but he would die before he admitted it. That is what I HATE about politics. Politicians (none of them) ever say what they think or they feel...only what they think you want to hear. I hate the pandering and dishonesty, on both sides. It reeks.

Drug companies
Why is it that other countries have American made medications so much cheaper than America. The argument has been well we pay the extra amount so drug companies can do research. Why us? We are expected to pay more for medications and also health benefits when other countries have universal healthcare and lower drug costs. It isnt right that Americans foot the bill for the world to enjoy the medications we produce at less cost than us. It isnt right that Americans have to go bankrupt when faced with a major illness because either their healthcare is inadequate or they dont have healthcare. If this administration really cared about what Americans need most, they wouldnt be talking about Social Security, they would be devising a universal health plan for all Americans. Some say that would be socialized medicine. Heck, when you dont have any health coverage, socialized medicine is better than nothing.

I don't believe any group of people should have special rights, but I certainly believe they should have equal rights. I do believe homosexuals should be allowed to marry, be entitled to family health insurance coverage, etc. I am not sure what special rights homosexuals are looking for, other than fair treatment. If we continue to look at them as sinners, which I cannot believe God created a whole group of people and they are all sinners because they are homosexual, they will always be thought of as outcasts, as other races were (and still are) treated in this country.
Hopefully your children will never have to make the abortion decision, but I have learned to never say never. My best friend is the daughter of an Assembly of God minister, and she had an abortion at age 16. She has never told her parents to this day (24 years later).

B Clinton was not impeached for sex crimes
To say he was impeached for "sex crimes" does the justice system a dishonor and is completely false. It also implies that he didn't do anything wrong and he was just impeached for having an affair (it tries to make it sound like he did nothing wrong and everyone was after him).
For all those who have forgotten, he was impeached for perjury, obstruction of justice, and abuse of power.
First there was travelgate, next was Vince Foster being shot then investigators being denied access to Foster's office however Clinton's aides entered within hours after he was shot and documents were removed. Then there was James & Susan McDougal, failed loans, alleged legal activities at Madison Guarantee, Webb Hubbell, Vernon Jordan, Paula Jones, Monica Lewinsky (which led to his lies) oh yes, and when asked why he had the affair he said "because I could" (not because I love her or even because I care for her or even because she's hot - no, "because I could?"). Then his lies led to Hillary lying and AL Gore lying. Then Bill lying more "That depends on what the meaning of is is", etc, etc. There were 11 impeachable offenses against Bill Clinton. That is Eleven of them. So to just say he was impeached for sex crimes is a false statement and does a disservice to the judicial system. This was one of the worst presidents (imo) and he was disgraced the office of president. Richard Nixon did not even have as many articles to be impeached for. The worst offense however was that he was not removed from office.

Petition for Bush War Crimes
We the undersigned citizens of the United States hereby formally petition you to appoint a Special Prosecutor to investigate and prosecute any and all government officials who have participated in War Crimes.
These crimes are being euphemistically referred to as "abusive interrogation techniques" by such respected figures as Senator John McCain. These are euphemisms for torture. Torture is a War Crime. Waterboarding is a War Crime. The CIA has admitted waterboarding detainees. Recently, Vice President Cheney has brazenly admitted authorizing the program that led to waterboarding, other forms of torture too numerous to list, and ultimately, the deaths by homicide of detainees.
As Major General Antonio Taguba, the Army general who led the investigation into prisoner abuse at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison has stated:
"After years of disclosures by government investigations, media accounts and reports from human rights organizations, there is no longer any doubt as to whether the current administration has committed war crimes. The only question that remains to be answered is whether those who ordered the use of torture will be held to account."
The Washington Post recently summarized the Senate Armed Services Committee Report on detainee treatment thusly:
A bipartisan panel of senators has concluded that former defense secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and other top Bush administration officials bear direct responsibility for the harsh treatment of detainees at Guantanamo Bay, and that their decisions led to more serious abuses in Iraq and elsewhere.
We the undersigned citizens demand a full and thorough investigation immediately upon your taking office. This investigation should be pursued no matter where it may lead and no matter what the political implications may be. To this end, we remind you that you work not on behalf of or for the President or the Congress, but for the People of the United States of America and for Justice itself.
The United States is a representative democracy. The actions of our government officials are done in the name of its citizens. War Crimes have been committed in our name. Torture has been done in our name. The only way to clear our name of War Crimes is to repudiate them through the aggressive prosecution of each and every person involved to the full extent of the law through the appointment of a Special Prosecutor.

Hate crimes bill
I haven't had time to read your link yet but just wanted to interject an opinion from someone effected by the bill. I have seen state level hate crime legislation in action. What I've seen happen is that a capital crime is reduced, basically, to a crime of passion offense and punished as a 2nd degree offense instead of capital murder (big difference between 12-20 and life). For this reason, I've been totally against the hate crimes bill. While gay hysteria exists in crimes against us, I don't think it should be able to be used as a defense in order to get reduced sentences. Friends have tried to explain that the hate crimes bills were created to try to prevent that from happening but I have not seen that. Perhaps I'm missing something.

You have to have special license from the state....
and it is done specifically to reduce the predator population where moose and caribou populations are in danger from too many predators in the area. It is not done for sport. It is done all over our western United States to reduce predator populations.
People don't want oil drilling to disturb the caribou, but don't mind large wolf populations taking them out? As far as hard to watch videos, have you ever seen a wolf pack attack a carbiou and devour it while it is still kicking? Not pretty.
This aerial hunting practice has been used for years, and while I would not engage in it, sometimes it is necessary to control predator populations. Environmentalists sometimes make a mistake in going overboard to protect predators, then when other species are endangered by the overpopulation, things like this become necessary.

I saw (but didn't read) a post in passing about Alaska and its meth labs. Shoot, I grew up in Nebraska, and back in the 70s it was totally out of control. Rural areas seem to be magnets for them, regardless of who's in office, so in my opinion neither party who is in control at this time or another can't and won't stop it. It's sad, but true.

Bush Turns His Terror War on the Homeland

When I was a kid John Wayne war movies gave us the message that America was the good guy, the white hat that fought the villain.
Alas, today the US and its last remaining non-coerced ally, Israel, are almost universally regarded as the bad guys over whom John Wayne would triumph. Today the US and Israel are seen throughout the world as war criminal states.
On August 23 the BBC reported that Amnesty International has brought war crimes charges against Israel for deliberately targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure as an integral part of Israel's strategy in its recent invasion of Lebanon.
Israel claims that its aggression was self-defense to dislodge Hezbollah from southern Lebanon. Yet, Israel bombed residential communities all over Lebanon, even Christian communities in the north in which no Hezbollah could possibly have been present.
United Nations spokesman Jean Fabre reported that Israel's attack on civilian infrastructure annihilated Lebanon's development: Fifteen years of work have been wiped out in a month.
Israel maintains that this massive destruction was unintended collateral damage.
President Bush maintains that Israel has a right to protect itself by destroying Lebanon.
Bush blocked the attempt to stop Israel's aggression and is, thereby, equally responsible for the war crimes. Indeed, a number of reports claim that Bush instigated the Israeli aggression against Lebanon.
Bush has other war crime problems. Benjamin Ferenccz, a chief prosecutor of Nazi war crimes at Nuremberg, recently said that President Bush should be tried as a war criminal side by side with Saddam Hussein for starting aggressive wars, Hussein for his 1990 invasion of Kuwait and Bush for his 2003 invasion of Iraq.
Under the Nuremberg standard, Bush is definitely a war criminal. The US Supreme Court also exposed Bush to war crime charges under both the US War Crimes Act of 1996 and the Geneva Conventions when the Court ruled in Hamdan v. Rumsfeld against the Bush administration's military tribunals and inhumane treatment of detainees.
President Bush and his Attorney General agree that under existing laws and treaties Bush is a war criminal together with many members of his government. To make his war crimes legal after the fact, Bush has instructed the Justice (sic) Department to draft changes to the War Crimes Act and to US treaty obligations under the Geneva Conventions.
One of Bush's changes would deny protection of the Geneva Conventions to anyone in any American court.
Bush's other change would protect from prosecution any US government official or military personnel guilty of violating Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions. Article 3 prohibits at any time and in any place whatsoever outrages upon personal dignity, in particular, humiliating and degrading treatment. As civil libertarian Nat Hentoff observes, this change would also undo Senator John McCain's amendment against torture.
Eugene Fidell, president of the National Institute of Military Justice says that Bush's changes immunize past crimes.
Under the US Constitution and US legal tradition, retroactive law is impermissible. What do Americans think of their President's attempts to immunize himself, his government, CIA operatives, military personnel and civilian contractors from war crimes?
Apparently, the self-righteous morally superior American Christian public could care less. The Republican controlled House and Senate, which long ago traded integrity for power, are working to pass Bush's changes prior to the mid-term elections in the event the Republicans fail to steal three elections in a row and Democrats win control of the House or Senate.
Meanwhile, the illegal war in Iraq, based entirely on Bush administration lies, grinds on, murdering and maiming ever more people. According to the latest administration estimate, the pointless killing will go on for another 10-15 years.
Trouble is, there are no US troops to carry on the war. The lack of cannon fodder forces the Bush administration to resort to ever more desperate measures. The latest is the involuntary recall of thousands of Marines from the inactive reserves to active duty. Many attentive people regard this desperate measure as a sign that the military draft will be reinstated.
According to President Bush, the US will lose the war on terror unless the US succeeds in defeating the Iraqi terrorists by establishing democracy in Iraq. Of course, insurgents resisting occupation are not terrorists, and there were no insurgents or terrorists in Iraq until Bush invaded.
Bush's unjustified invasion of Iraq and his support for Israeli aggression have done more to create terrorism in the Muslim world than Osama bin Laden could hope for. The longer Bush occupies Iraq and the more he tries to extend US/Israeli hegemony in the Middle East, the more terrorism the world will suffer.
Bush and the Zionist/neocon ideology that holds him captive are the greatest 21st century threats to peace and stability. The neoconized Bush regime invented the war on terror, lost it, and now is bringing terror home to the American people.

There is also evidence that crack cocaine use is linked to a higher incidence crime/violent crime than the use of "blow." Next time you set out to assasignate someone's character, remember you will be a whole lot more credible with (a) a little more research, and (b) a little less exaggeration.
Obama did not quantify his use in the book. He only defined the time span as sometime during his high school senior year until he arrived in New York to attend Columbia University, to include his 2 years at Occidental College (1979-1981). This would mean that he experimented with drugs at ages 17, 18 and 19 while in his teens. He decided to stop the drug use on his own accord. He began writing the book in 1990 and it was published in mid 1995, a year before he ran for office. It is worth noting that he was not forced to include this information in the book....he chose to. He disclosed one of his "greatest regrets," (his words) within the context of an honest, sincere, and direct expression of its (drug use) relationship to race relations and biographical information. Political agenda does not seem to be the motivation.
Cindy McCain's addiction ensued at the adult age of 35, nine years into her marriage, as a mother of three children, ages 5, 3 and 1. Her addiction spanned 3 years, about the same as Obama's "experimental" use. However, her disclosure (even to her husband) was not voluntary. John McCain was informed of her addiction during a forced (birth) family intervention, who then at the ripe adult age of 52, proceeded to engineer the "diversion program" cover-up/escape of criminal charges as described in the other post and in the midst of an active DEA investigation and pending criminal trial.
Aside from the drug addiction, involving an AVMT MD in providing her with illegal prescriptions and stealing drugs, it seems that there were a few more fires John McCain sought to extinguish. Seems she had approached a member of AVMT's voluntary medical team, demanding that he commit perjury in adoption proceedings of her Bangladeshi baby daughter and had attempted to "prevent" a former foundation employee from giving accurate information to the DEA during it's investigation. Further allegations were made that Cindy had abused her husband's office and diplomatic privileges by transporting illegal substances overseas. Of course, none of these issues were ever formally aired during court proceedings, since John McCain was able to succeed in "diverting" this embarrassing disaster.
So let's see, she comes clean to her husband under the threat of criminal charges, public humiliation and the tangible possibility of ruining her husband's career and is okay with having other people perjure themselves to gain approval for bringing a 4th child/infant into the mix of the not-so-remote drug addiction. Looks like the money and political clout has served her well in staying out of prison, bypassing adoption standards and abusing her own authority over foundation MDs and employees. Also looks like her disclosure did have elements of political agenda as she sought to save her own behind.
Drug use is drug use. But age, context, duration, type, criminality and injury to other parties are also part of this picture. It is not hard to figure out where Obama's policies come from with regard to medical treatment versus incarceration for first-time users and/or non-violent drug offenses. On the other hand, where John McCain's lock-'em-down and shun-'em drug policies defy logic and fly in the face of how he decided to handle the situation when it was HIS house, HIS wife, HIS job and HIS future on the line.

I wonder if there is any member of the GOP who is able to accept these realities and own up to just a fraction of this despicable behavior? His inevitable legacy as the worst US President of all time does not even begin to address the justice he deserves.

Bush committed war crimes and Obama on day one of his presidency has already put in place measures to stop the crimes. Be proud because these are issues that affect human rights for all of us.
Read up, do your research, see what Amnesty International says... be PROUD now instead of ashamed to be an American! We are on the road to recovery, albeit a long road but at least Obama has us on track.

and anyone who thinks they can do as the KKK did years ago will have other repercussions. People are not putting up with that crap anymore- I know you might have some "groups" who talk big but as far as the hate crimes done in the past such as lynchings, beatings, etc. and people afraid to take action and turning their heads- those hateful, terrible things that over ran our country in the past are just that, things of the past.
