Do you work in a hospital or a Transcription Service

Office? It is a hospital there should be a manager that you can go to or an administrator. Production is key in hospital work, and it is important you have the quiet you need to produce.

I work for a hospital that has Cerner Classic Radnet and a service that sm
uses Cerner Millenium Radnet. The two are completely different. The Classic version does EXACTLY what you described with ShortHand but they found a solution at the hospital. I will look at it on Wednesday when I go to work. I'm embarassed to say that I have used it for so long that I don't pay attention anymore and can't remember the name of the program.

Hospital at-home job vs. service
Here is the scoop:  I work for a service now, but was offered an at-home position with a local hospital at $14.70 per hour with benes.  WHAT SHOULD I DO???????
Hospital versus Service
The experience you will get at the hospital cannot be beat. Nothing compares to having experienced coworkers to help when you are stuck on something.
Last resort is applying at the service the hospital is using.

Angry, this happened in our hospital with our outsource service - sm
we had not been checking the outsource service's work for months. Well, it came back to bite us in the ass, because low and behold there was a Transcriptionist that worked for the outsource service that could not type whatsoever - in fact, we even suspected that it was being offshored without our knowledge - that's how bad it was.

anyways, it came back to bite us in the ass because an outside doctor's office received a copy of a hospital dictation and it made us look stupid. So needless to say, we asked that this certain transcriptionist be taken off the account. It was our fault for not looking at the transcription services work, but then again, they guarantee accuracy and crap like that.

Maybe this is what happened in your situation. That all of a sudden the hospital decided to do a QA or some doctor finally read his dictation.

Don't be hard on yourself. You will get the hang of it.
the service that works on our hospital account definitely pads
Many of us inhouse have tried to point it out to the supervisors, i.e. tons of spaces after a header, three or four spaces after a period, using spaces instead of tab button, for god sakes, spelling out milligrams and computerized axial tomography and every single abbreviated term that you can imagine and stuff like that. they even make their blanks verrrrryyyyy long!

Thank goodness the contract with them is going to be coming to an end by March. It just burns us that we get monitored for it, and the outside service does not. They also do not get penalized for mistakes either.
transcription service provider, I think. nm

Medical Transcription Service Owner :D
When you do not know, you should ask and you are not an idiot! :)
thinking about selling my transcription service...
and just wondering if any one has any opinion on interest in that. The person owning the company would make a minimum of $82,500 a year, running the business and doing some transcribing part time. It would be very easy to do some marketing and bring in some new accounts, which could easily push that 82500 to over 100000 a year. I have repetitive stress injury and my doctor has told me I need to find something else to do. I was thinking if there was an MT or a group of MT's (the company is incorporated so shares can be sold) that would like to get together, they can eliminate the middle man, earn retail price for their lines and establish job security, not to mention satisfaction. Price would be around $250,000 but like I said, a group of people could go together to cover that and with a little work in marketing, it could be paid off in three years. The business is about 10 years old and to the point where it is generating its own referrals. It could really go places if someone wanted to spend a little time marketing to a few new hospitals. Any one have any thoughts on this.

Software to Use to Set Up Digital Transcription Service

Hi Everyone,

Looking for assistance with setting up a digital dictation transcription service.  What is the appropriate software to use for the digital dictation, transcription, downloading voice files, typing reports, uploading reports to facility, HIPAA compliance, etc.  Would like to do this without spending a huge amount of money, but at the same time want to be secure and compliant.  Any and all assistance would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Transcription Application Service Provider.
IOW the smart computer folks who deal with the headaches! :)
They provide HIPAA complaint file hosting/ftp set up for MTs. Some charge per line, other charge per month, it just varies. Some provide a call in dictation service and charge per minute. It's great if you have no capital in invest in equipment. :)
I'm not sure but I think it's what some MTs refer to as a platform?

I think any transcription service can well assess an MTs ability
requires so many test files to be transcribed is taking advantage of applicants.
Considering selling my transcription service. See message
I have an established transcription service that I am considering selling. Anyone know who I would contact to pursue this? Thanks in advance.
I worded it wrong - should have said new idea for transcription service. sm
This "branch" of the company will be in office only. The rest of our transcriptionists are at home. I just feel that new grads have no place to go after finishing school but realistically they are not ready to be on their own at home for 6 months to a year. This will bridge that gap, let us train new MTs correctly, add more MTs to the U.S. transcription pool, etc.

My DH is a Service Engineer, installs/services electron microscopes at hospital, Universities, gov&#
he makes a LOT more than me. My monthly pay equals one of his paychecks after taxes, sad. All he has is a 2 year technical degree too. So if we did not have so many expenses we'd be quite comfy (losing a major one in 4 months though, yeah)....in 5 years when the house is paid off we will be every comfy, can't wait to not have to work! I would get back into my jewelry business FT and see if I can finally make that fly! Have a BFA and don't use it, what a waste.
American Association of Medical Transcription Service Owners
They do not represent the rights of the individual Transcriptionist it seems but rather promote their organization in order to continue to exist and to continue to survive, they seem to think they should stand up for the service owner and not the MT.

You'd think they would be giving information on how to get more production since our wages have stood still and unless speed engines are used, we make much less than what one would think.

Idea for a new transcription service. We are looking for some ideas to firm things up. TIA. sm

Here is the basic structure:

All work kept in the United States.  Recent graduates of either a 2-year community college program or one of the better distance learning courses.

We are thinking of opening a combination office/training center.  Half will be recent grads.  Half will be seasoned MTs who like to mentor.

The seasoned MTs will get an hourly with a line incentive as there will be time taken away to be second ear for the newbies, more in the beginning, less as time goes on.

The newbies will have to be in-house at the company for one year on either 1st, 2nd or 3rd shift.

The newbies will receive either by the line or by the hour, have not decided.

What do you think would be a fair hourly for the new grad?  For the seasoned MT who will be transcribing their own work and mentoring.

We want to be generous without going bankrupt.

Do you all think the idea is a good one?

If you could work in house at a company with good benefits would you prefer that to working at home?

Just looking for some input.  It looks good to us, but outside opinions really can be eye-openers.

This is an established company, so there would be plenty of work.  All of our MTs are home-based now, but not sure if everyone really wants to be home-based.  We are near a major metropolitan area, so finding the MTs should not be a problem.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

..or when the doc dictates "prior report LOST by XXX Transcription Service...AGAIN." sm
I work for a national MT company, we do hospitals all over the country, I work from home. I have NO control over where the chart goes once I send it in, I'd bet the original chart was never dictated and hence never 'lost' by us....but in the case that it may have been, THEY HAVE THE PHONE NUMBER of the company to call them, they have specific contacts at the company for issues such as this...I CAN'T HELP YOU WITH THIS, especially when all they're doing is bitching at me on a voice file. Funny, it's always the same couple of docs complaining of lost dictations. Curious that it's JUST THEM. ;-)
You will be notified via email. Gift pull is not instant because I also run a transcription service

in addition to running MTStars and the donation program.

Thank you for your patience!

I think they are actually dictating to a transcription service (Baker Sten-Stel) via C-phone
then they e-mail back to the doctor's office for me to type. So maybe it will go back to them for QA. Why I don't know. This work cameto me from a temp service and they obviously did not know much. I will find out Monday morning. Thanks for your input. I will more than likely be on this site screaming for help. The AOL question was just in case I can get them to use my home office next time, because I just switched to DSL through AOL and I was hoping that would would work with Express Scribe, my footpedal and their software.
Hospital transcription

A customer of mine called me the other day to let me know about a diagnostic imaging opening at a hospital and she told me the benefits are around 300.00 for child and spouse added.  I would rather pay something like that than to have to put up with this woman.  The pay starts out for bottom line 10.06 an hour, maxing out at 15.09 an hour.  I am really thinking about getting into coding too.

Thank you all again for listening to me.

New to hospital transcription
Hi,
I was wanting to get some advice from some people who have done hospital transcription before. I am new to it. I have done clinic transcription for 9 years mainly family practice and the doctors that I have done have been for the most part really easy going and are not too particular about grammar and so forth, but I have just gotten an IC position for a local hospital and was wondering how difficult it is. I have always heard that it is really hard to do. How much difference is there between hospital and clinic transcription and what is it that makes it so much more difficult. Any advice would be gladly appreciated. I am really nervous and I need this job and I want to be able to do it. Thanks in advance.
We're not a transcription service. We offer toll free call in dictation
service at rock bottom prices. I was only offering you an alternative without having to put out a lot of money by buying handheld units.
No more radiology transcription at my hospital
The medical center I worked for did away with radiology transcriptionists a few years back. They came up with "canned" reports and VR and have ZERO radiology transcriptionists. They also cut back on their xray lab/medical record clerks by installing a PAC (sp?) system as well.
On-call transcription in a small hospital

I work for a very small rural hospital with only two full-time transcriptionists and one part-time transcriptionist.  We have recently been told that the administration of our hospital is entertaining the idea of on-call Transcriptionist for uncovered hours.  We already work alternating Saturdays (day shift only).  I wanted to know if any other hospitals out there do on-call transcription (Not from home and not outsourced).  They want us to physically drive in and be in the office to do this transcription.  Any information at all would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

How do I find out if a local hospital's transcription is done in-house or not?
Can someone please give me some advice?  I am trying to find out if one of our local hospitals has in-house transcription or what company they use for their transcription.  I called the MR Dept. and the lady acted like she did not want to tell me anything.  She said some was done in-house but most of it was done electronically and would not elaborate as to what company they used.  How can I go about finding out who does their transcription for them.  I never see any actual job opening in the MR Dept. or for transcription for them, so I am assuming they outsource most to a transcription company.
I would like to get on with the hospital or possibly the company who handles their transcription.
I have been considering working locally instead of for a national or switching to another company from the company I currently work for. Since losing my initial primary account and having to switch to another account, my income has declined and it doesn't appear to be getting any better. Not sure why, it is not from my lack of working. I just can't seem to make the counts on this new account as I could on my previous account. I now do some editing on top of my transcription due to time restraints I cannot put in any more hours than I already do. Thanks for the input. My husband recently started working at this particular hospital. I am hoping he will be able to find out for me but no luck yet.
In 5 years there won't be any transcription departments in any hospital. All will be outsourced.
Same thing happened to me and if those HIM hags who control our destiny think it's a good thing they are so WRONG.  Life has been hard since having to work at a service, and I refused to work for the Monster MTSO that took my job as a matter of principle.  I think we should all write to Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Amy Klobuchar (the MT in MN can write to her), etc., and express our strong needs to  have MT jobs and American information STAY in America with American MTs.
Take at home transcription job or unit secretary job at hospital?
I've been an MT for 12 years and have worked at home doing MT for 10 years. Recently got replaced by EMR so had to find work elsewhere. I took a job at a local hospital as a unit secretary working 3-11 now I have been offered a job with a national transcription company. I'm not sure if I should go back to transcribing since the line count/money making potential has me worried. I've been assured that I will never run out of work but I'm worried that I will actually be working longer than the 8 hour shift in order to make the amount of money I need. I would love to be back home with my kids typing again as I miss not seeing them as much as I used to and they want me to be home. I am just not sure if I should stay in a job at the hospital which has a guaranteed amount of money per pay period since I'm being paid by the hour and not by the line where my paycheck can vary. Any thoughts/suggestions/opinions, recommendations out there? Any and all would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!!
What companies provide computers? Hospital is outsourcing all transcription and I am out of a job..

in about two months.  I lost my computer and reference books in a house fire and can't afford to replace the computer until I get my tax refund back or until my homeowners insurance co. gets their act together which ever comes first!

This is the second time I've lost an in-house hospital transcription job to outsourcing and have decided if you can't beat 'em, join 'em and so I want to go back to working at home.  What are the best companies to work for that provide equipment and are fair regarding line counts (i.e. count spaces and don't short MT's on lines) and have balanced accounts (accounts that have a fair ESL to EFL dictator ratio) to work on?

I have 13 years experience as an MT and I am desparately looking for a company to call home for as long as they will have me!  I worked at home for a couple of years, but never could find that perfect fit.  My new year's resolution is find a job I love working from home, and forget all about last year!

Thanks!

Keep applying at jobs is my opinion. Find out where your local hospital transcription is done

Lost account of 28 years to Dictaphone because hospital believes it will eliminate all transcription
Curious if any of you are working for Dictaphone or Infomatics and doing an account out of Miami with mainly ESL dictators?  I was convinced I would not lose the account after a few days with VR. However Dictaphone is not using VR right away and will transcribe reports the regular way until they have a database. I am certain this hospital will never be done by VR. I posted a job on here about a year ago offering 18 cents per line to help with this account and not one person  accepted after hearing the ESL doctors we have. They are that bad.  Anyone else have this happen to them? Losing to Dictaphone  And we have had to do most of the work for over a month since they supposedly took over because their system is not working.
Have a hospital I work for and they consistently change work types and do line counts. (sm)
Management just doesn't understand in order to crank out the work you need to be proficient by typing the same accounts. Go figure, they just don't get it ??
the hospital I work for already has started to implement this and lessen our work
I see it every single day... they are going to EMR... meaning the doctors simply use a template already in the computer and check boxes or something... The doctor's office i GO TO actually does this too. This is why it creates tech jobs to create those templates and takes AWAY MT jobs because the doctor is no longer dictating, they are just pushing little buttons or checking boxes straight into the computer.

Personally I still think that is more time than the doc wants to take but whatever, i dont see how generic charts are good, what happened to detailed information...

But this is definitely how i see it going along. Maybe not everywhere, but plenty of places are going to go to this, it's all about saving money now isn't it???

Okay to work for more than one service.

Is it okay to work for more than one service at a time? Do you have to be IC to do that, or can you mix and match with employee status?  Is a small service better to work for, generally, than a national?  If you work for a clinic can you also work for a service at the same time? Thanks for any input.

That's all I will do. Every service I work for. nm

Does it bother any of you who work for a service
I accepted a job with a company not knowing that they outsource offshore until today and I have mixed feelings about whether I should continue looking for a different job or stick with this one.

Baffled
I work for a service, a rather large one sm
They probably, or possibly, keep the records for awhile, in Echart.  But as an IC, I would think that legally, you would be limited to the amount of time you are allowed to keep patients medical records, and I would bet it would be around 30 days, not more.
suggestion for those who work for a service
I had problems earlier this week when I had to reinstall my Java and ended up with a weird word processing program that also attached itself from Sun and also when I STOOPIDLY downloaded a Bittorrent file and of course could not "remove" either through the usual way and of course, it caused my system to almost have a nervous breakdown and after hours of "trying to figure it out myself", I ended up calling a remote techinical service.

The name of the service is HiWired and I used them in the past about 3 years ago when I was having problems with my desktop. The initial person that I spoke to told me the charge would be $73 and I told her that would be okay. The tech installed AVG Free on my puter and told me about the horrors of the bit torrent files etc. He also installed another free antispyware program on my machine and in all, spent about 2 to 2 and a half hours the other night working on the machine. When everything was back to normal, I checked my account and sure enough, $73 was all that I was charged -- NOTHING was added to the bill like some places that will "give you a rate" but the more work that is done, then the bill goes up."

Also, the wonderful thing about HiWired is that they are based in MA, they work 24/7 and all their techs are AMERICAN technicans.

Sorry for the long post.

With the service I work for at home, we also
have access to the patient's electronic record to verify dictation.
If you work for a hospital - how come no one from the hospital
called you?? Were they in the dark, as well?? How sad, that no one in your hospital communicates with the at home staff.
Depends on what kind of hospital? Large urban hospital or small community hospital? SM

Also, is it a large teaching hospital? If so you have to consider there will be A LOT of different residents dictating, usually a lot of ESLs at teaching hospitals, and the residents rotate out and new ones rotate in every summer. So you can't expect to get the same dictators and build up your macros because the dictators change all the time.

I would say 9 cpl would be a pretty good offer for a small to medium community hospital where you will be doing the same dictators on a daily basis.  But for bigger, urban or teaching hospitals I would want at least 12 to 15 cpl.

does anyone else work for a service where you have to get your line counts from a website?(sm)

I presently work for two services.  For service A our line counts post to the company password-protected website.  However, that isn't a problem as the program we use shows us our line counts as we go along.  Also, the line counts are available to us, from the program, within five minutes at the most after finishing the job.  It also posts to the website within that time frame.

However, for service B we have to completely RELY on the website for our line counts.  I'm not sure how the site works or how the jobs/counts get posted to that site but there are ALWAYS times where this site is down (usually around the end of the payperiod so we can't tell how much we've typed at any giving moment.)  Also, we cannot verify whether those counts are right because we do not have access to what is considered a line (other than the standard "65-character-including spaces").  Does anyone else work for a service where you have to get your line counts this way?  What do you all think.

Ahhh, so you've chosen to work for a service
There are others who are still gaining their own accounts.  Sometimes, you have to seek and you shall find.  The larger companies and even smaller for that matter are gaining accounts to prove that voice recognition is not the majority.  Just because you chose to take less does not mean that everyone in this profession has.  So, your opinions are fine for your situation, but to state that everyone's salary and this profession has gone downhill is simply not true.  I, for one, have a lot more now than I have ever had in my lifetime, and I have a lot of experience.  The in-house position was holding me back.  When you get paid per hour instead of production, it seems you get jipped.  If you work production and are good at what you do, it is not too bad of a salary.  Everyone has a different situation.  MTblab is getting out, which is great for her since she is moving into another phase of her life.  Of course, she is going to post that it is a horrible profession because she is not happy with what she has been served.  Misery LOVES company.  You do have a choice in what type of work you take.  If not happy, again, seek and you shall find.  I am so happy to be , because I make the rules.  Okay, I am off of my  now.  Take care.
