Muslims are those who practice Islam and they may be moderate or fundamentalist, but not necessarily militant. They do not fall under the term Islamist.

Islamists are MILITANT (aggressive, warlike, ram-Islam-down-your-throat, and not you-practice-your-faith-and-I'll practice-mine-can't-we-all-get-along?) fundamentalist Muslims.

To be an Islamist one must be both Muslim and fundamentalist as well as extreme. To be a Muslim, one need not be extreme, fundamentalist or Islamist, one need only practice Islam.

Don't know how much more plainly this can be stated.
