FYI.. I gave birth to a child with hydrocephalus

Posted By: let it shine on 2007-03-26
In Reply to: Well I had a friend at work who wanted a baby badly - and at 7 months along found out the baby

She'll turn 7 in August, is in first grade, loving it, developing "normally." We had a tough go at first with surgeries, a shunt infection, and finally got her home from the hospital at 6 weeks old, and then had an abrupt shunt failure when she was 5 with emergency surgery. Other than that, you wouldn't know that she has medical issues at all. She is absolutely the light of my life. I can't imagine having snuffed out this little light before it even had a chance to shine.

I gave a child up for adoption...
hitchhiked alone cross country twice as a teenager. Oh, and I love Howard Stern, I listen everyday.
gave child up for adoption in 70's

The kid has issues.  And not just with me.  Once, when she was staying with me, her adoptive mother sent her a gift card from Target.  The kid's reaction was - how DARE she send me a card to a store that isn't near where I live?  Now I have to go to all kinds of effort to use it - and it isn't the first time she has done this.  Kid proceed to call that mom and tonguelash her for stupidity, thoughtlessness, selfishness (?!), etc. until that mom hung up on her and has refused to speak to her since.  And stopped giving her anything.

Now we're not speaking either, but not regarding gifts, our problems include entitlement isssues, respect issues, lack of maturity in general.  I am reluctantly storing some of her belongings that she abandoned here (as I know she cannot afford to come retrieve them) and she is using others as go-betweens to demand I bring certain items when I travel up there this summer.  I keep telling those others she should consider herself lucky I haven't put it all in a pile and had a nice bonfire; as she claimed her step-mother did to belongings she left there.  People treat her the way they do for a reason - she is nasty-tempered, rude and thinks the world revolves around planet HER.

I can't fix her.  I've tried to help her, but I see I cannot.  So I've joined the ranks of people she has alienated that ignore her on holidays.  Its a pretty large group.

hydrocephalus
When my mother was pregnant with my last brother, at 6 months of age, her body tried to abort the baby. She bled and bled and wound up being put in the hospital (this was in the late 1950s). They did not have all this technology, but they tried to keep her from having the miscarriage and succeeded. They sent her home. She had to stay in bed for 3 months and during that 3 months, almost lost my mother several times due to hemorrhaging.

Anyway, when my brother was born, he was simply beautiful. He had the bluest eyes I have ever seen on any child. He was perfect we thought. When he was 3 months old, he started to run a very high temperature and mama called the doctor to come out to the house (they made house calls back then) and when the doc came out, he told us that we needed to get my brother to the hospital ASAP because he had hydrocephalus. His head was larger than normal (longer from front to back and his soft spot was tight). My little brother spent 3 years in and out of the hospital, multiple surgeries, was never able to talk, never grew. He looked the same as he did as a newborn. I loved him so much. I remember this all like it were yesterday...visiting him in the hospital, seeing him in convulsions, and occasionally we could take him home. I would hold him almost all the time he was awake.

Well we lost him when he was 3-1/2. He died in the hospital. How did he die? He died of falling off of the bed and the shunt breaking. This baby could not turn over or move. He was in one position all the time.

This little life made a difference in ours. Unfortunately, they told us that he could never see us or hear us (though I really cannot believe that as sometimes he did respond). Each little person makes an imprint, but that was no life for my brother.

I am pro-choice. I believe these tests were developed for reasons such as this...not to avoid a problem, but for the parent to make that choice because there is a risk to the baby. Either way, that baby would make a difference in our lives, but what kind of life is that for a child.

Now, there are different degrees of hydrocephalus...it depends on what is causing the hydrocephalus. Hydro is just a symptom of an illness. Therefore, that is a hard decision for someone to have to make...and those who have had to make that decision did what was best for them and I am sure not easily.

Just because a child has hydrocephalus, does not give someone an instant "I want to abort." There are decisions to be made. I think it right that there is a choice, but that decision is not an easy decision to make no matter what way a parent chooses.

If a parent chooses to go on and have that child, just like the poster below, her child is precious to her and is her world. These are special children.

What I am saying is that either way, these children are special...whether we choose to have them or whether we choose not to put them through a life that is unknown.

God bless the mother below whose daughter is doing well. I know how much you cherish your little girl. I wish my brother had done well, but under the circumstances, there was no way he would have ever functioned normally. I loved him so much and we were heartbroken. I will always remember him and to this day, my mother has never mentioned that she was sorry she gave birth to him, though there weren't choices back then, but had they known then what they do today, I doubt they would have tried to keep her from miscarrying.

Should say the child found in Florida proved to be the Caylee child, homicide.

Giving birth at 70?

A 70-year-old woman from India claims she has become the world's oldest new mother.

Rajo Devi and her husband Bala Ram had wanted a child in all their 50 years together.

She claims to have given birth to a baby girl at the end of November after having IVF treatment. Her husband is 72.

Your birth place

Have you moved or been back to the place (town) you were born? Has is changed drastically or is it pretty much the same?

I was just looking a pictures online of mine and it hasn't changed all that much.

There most certainly WAS birth control back then--sm
it was called ABSTINANCE.
Celebrating the birth of my first grandchild, sm
born Friday afternoon at 12:37 p.m. They are coming home today, I am heading to their house to help out, my daughter tore a lot during delivery, is sore, so I want to do whatever I can, and enjoy the baby, BTW, a girl, 7 pounds, 15 ounces. Yikes, it's official, I really am getting old.
birth control pills
There are enough hormones in birth control pills to make you have a period, even if you are in menopause.

But menopause is not a disease and it most definitely is not a mental disease.

I plan on spoiling myself during this special time. To me, it will be just as magical as before it started and I will be just as happy to see it go, but I am certainly not sick or crazy because my hormones are rockin.
birth control pills
I am so thrilled to see that you think that there is nothing mental about menopause!! All the power to you!!
I personally know how "mental" PMS was and am very thankful for an OB/GYN who agrees that the safest way to combat the mood altering affects of menopause is for me to stay on Depo until I am at least 50 and then if I have any symptoms, I will go right back on it.
I do not intend to suffer any more than I have to. I have enjoyed 13+ years of no PMS thank you very much!! Oh and my MIL went through menopause about 12 years ago and still has hot flashes and nightsweats as does a DA so I am not sure when the symptoms all go away, but I will do whatever possible to avoid the "mental" ones anyway!!!!
Woman Gives Birth to 8 = Entertainment...sm

Like one poster said, because the human body is just not designed to carry this number of babies, these little ones will most likely suffer  a lifetime of congenital defects or illness.  Also,  I'm sure anyone here who has ever brought  home a baby (whether delivered or adopted), can attest to the physical, emotional, mental, and/or financial strains often associated with parenthood. Mother-infant bonding is vital part of normal human development.  I don't see how these babies will have the opportunity to experience this on an individual basis.  It's very sad that no one (mother or doctor) took their overall health and welfare into consideration.  After being deprived of even a healthy pregnancy, their overall start in life is going to be a very rough one, if they even live.   To exploit this situation in a reality show for the sake of entertainment truly sickens me.

In a country where endangering a person's life is illegal, anyone involved in a case like this should be prosecuted, IMO.  I would rank this woman's doctor right up there with Michael Jackson's plastic surgeon.

why not cut off the ears at birth to prevent
not circumcising can be reversed, if the boy/man so chooses. Having had a friend working in a gay porn store, hehe, there is a consensus among men that circumcised men miss out...
Sorry, not my year of birth? Why are you angry?
NM
The government will pay for birth control..
go to a planned parenthood. Very very cheap. There really is no excuse for 7 kids and no job for either parent. Join the military, get a job, like you said, at Wendy's or Wal-Mart or something. I am not against a hand up, but I am very much against a hand out.
It is the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ!!!!!!

she died of sepsis. May have something to do with the birth in the Bahamas. sm
She may have developed an infection and it turned into sepsis. I knew a girl once who had a miscarriage, developed sepsis, and almost died 6 months later. She was weak (she may have attributed the severe depression to her weakness from the death of her son), and this just reminded me of that gal I knew. She (the girl I knew) finally went to the doctor and they immediately wheeled her to a room and began IV antibiotics (she, too had developed extremely high fevers), and the surgeon said that had she not come to see a doctor within 24 hours she would have died. And this was MONTHS after the miscarriage....So, just a theory. The doctor on CNN also had this theory - maternal something. I can't remember the diagnosis....
Has anyone tried the Mirena birth control device or anything like it? sm

Having lots or problems with the pill and looking for new options. Thanks

No birth control pills when I had the abortions,
now how does that date me? The forms before the pills just not that good. When the BCP first came on the market, you were supposed to be married in order to obtain it. Facts that younger people would not even know now probably. Much easier now for younger people.
abstinance is the best form of birth control there is--sm
as opposed to killing babies. JMO. Besides coffee is bitter smelling and so is this. Wake up to life!
Unborn babies can't talk until they are given birth
gaa-gaa or a coo until probably 3-4 months.  They sleep most of the time right after birth, so when do we ask and receive an answer?
Abstinence is not Birth Control, it is SAFE SEX.
Abstinence is truly the only SAFE SEX....but it is NOT considered birth control........
Yes it is...no sex...no preggo...hence birth control. ummmm. nm

Birth records are public but are listed under
child's name - not parents - so not sure you could find out this way.
Someone posted a video of birth on youtube!

This is the same mare from last night and it's showing THE EVENT.  Very cool indeed for anyone who wants to watch!

Anything you think you can avoid by home schooling, not getting birth control, etc
for your children, talking incessantly about all the no-nos associated with premarital sex, etc will more than likely fall on deaf ears when it comes to children. I did live in a really big city and regardless of small or large, the girls are maturing much earlier and a lot involved in sex earlier than we as parents would like to believe. You can give a child talk after talk but restrictions, talking, home schooling, etc only goes so far with growing kids. You cannot protect your kids like you would really like to.
News flash: NO birth control is 100% effective.

Maybe she was on birth control. Who knows?  The Spears' do not seem like intelligent people to me, so maybe she wasn't smart enough to be on birth control, but remember that even the pill is only 99% effective when taken perfectly, and I imagine most women forget a pill every now and then, which lowers its effectiveness even more.  I hope and pray my kids don't have children at a young age, but if they do I will accept their children with open arms and try to be the best grandma I can be.  Much of life is about making the best of a bad situation.  Not everything is picket fences and roses.

Question on birth control and missed periods...sm
Has anyone ever skipped their period by starting a new pack of pills instead of doing the "period" week? I used to do this every now and then with my old brand of pills and never had any problems. When the next month would come along the period would start right when it was supposed to. I was switched a few months back to a new pill, generic Ortho Cyclen, and decided to skip my period over Christmas. It is now time for my period and nothing is happening. Anyone ever have this happen??  Thanks
She may be asking about it as a form of birth control, too. Time for "the talk." 13 is NOT too
s
in families of SEAHORSES-males carry/give birth

It sort of does make a difference when they use it as a form of birth control...
just my opinion.
I would not let my coworkers throw a baby shower BEFORE the birth of my daughter...
because both of my sons were born unexpectedly 2-3 days before their baby showers were planned. We had the baby shower 3 weeks after she was born.

(Was kind of embarrassed also to have a baby shower for the 3rd child anyway, but it was more gracious to allow them to throw one.)
Girl up for expulsion for taking birth control at school

This is a local story. Crazy, crazy, crazy.

Student Suspended for Popping Birth-Control Pill LSD or heroin use only gets five days out

By ASHA BEH

A gun or birth-control? Bringing either to school lands you a two-week suspension in Virginia.

A Fairfax County teen has been suspended for two weeks -- and might also get kicked out of school -- for popping a birth-control pill at school.

The honor student and lettered athlete at Oakton high school was caught taking the pill during lunch and soon found herself in the assistant principal's office, The Washington Post reported. During the meeting with her mother and the assistant principal, the school handed down the maximum sentence: a two-week suspension and recommendation for expulsion.

That's the rule in Virginia regarding prescription medications and illegal drugs on campus. And make no mistake, anti-teen pregnancy campaign or not, they take that rule seriously.

It's all in the Student Responsibilities and Rights handbook: If she had been caught high on LSD, heroin or another illegal drug, she would have been suspended for five days. Taking her prescribed birth-control pill on campus, on the other hand, gets the same punishment as bringing a gun to school.

I gave my mom some too, and she
said it takes her less than half the time now to clean certain things with them, because you don't have to scrub as much to get it clean.

I would like to use the mop, but I am afraid it won't clean the ceramic tile as good as other mops. Where did you get yours? Do you clean ceramic with it?
Never gave up anything before, but
going to give up soda this year and maybe it will stick afterwards.
I gave up
about a quarter of the way through. It needed some paragraphs.

I liked the baked beans slithering out of the can though. Made me chuckle.
NO - she gave him 20 and he put in 30.

My EX MIL gave me...
One year I was on weight watchers and doing really well - and for Christmas, my MIL bought me a big box of cookies and a box of chocolates!

Shows you how she felt about me, huh?
I think you do know. He gave you the answer. sm
And you have to take that answer at face value. You've gone away with him for a weekend, so it seems like he's willing to take more than he's willing to give. If you don't want him to "shoplift the pootie", then listen to your security system.

He told you what he's thinking, and either you're ok with that, and you continue on. Or, you're not ok with it, and you have to move on.

What was the best gift you GAVE?

mine was the digital camera to DIL. She is very reserved, but actually started crying, and jumped up and gave me a HUGE, LONG, hard hug! I was shocked!! She had mentioned wanting one last year, but didn't tell us until a week before Christmas, and we already had our shopping done by then. She said we even bought the one she had picked out, and was planning on getting after the holidays, hoping it would be on sale. It is the Kodak one with the printer. I told son later, she took the award for the BEST reaction EVER to a gift!!! He laughed and agreed.

I'd have to say the most DISAPPOINTING reaction was one I expected. It was from SIL. The one I talked about on here, never gives me any feedback, is so exasperating. I had given her a Creative Memories Carry Case, filled with scrapbook making supplies to get started, and three scrapbooks to start with, one with refills. One was a gorgeous victorian one, one was plain navy blue, and the third was a purse sized one, I was thinking to put grandkid pics in. She opened it, and said nothing. I said I hope you like it, I know how creative you are, and how much you love to do crafts, etc., I thought you would create some AWESOME memories for the kids with these! She just said yeah, thanks. *sigh* BIL said he thought it was a great idea. I don't know. It was a letdown to me though, I was REALLY hoping she'd LOVE it!!

Thanks for the support for those who gave it.
I don't feel I need to answer "Jessie" anymore.
How about now I have a bad check they gave me
this morning. I would never try to put into my personal account and draw from that. Went directly to the bank to get $$$$ in hand. You are no longer able to find out if a company has the money to cover an amount by calling but there is a fraud line. I intend to open up another acct - I have an acct there also and really big place. If that check does not clear, then i talk with fraud division about that company. I am still in there swinging. I was told by a furniture salesman that I caused him to lose 3 customers yesterday when I was in there, told him good - my intentions.
