A Chinese bank is opening up in the USA.  Bush at one time had wanted to sell "security" of our ports to an Arab country.  We have two citizen heroes rotting away in jail because they did their job of protecting our border with Mexico and were forced to kill a criminal in the process of doing that job.

As far as the redistribution of wealth, below I have copied and pasted what I feel is, by far, the most interesting article I've read on that topic.  In my opinion, a "trickle up" policy needs to be implemented as soon as possible because the "trickle down" theory has not worked.

Since Reagan we've been trying to make "Trickle-Down economics" work: For those to whom promises were made, Trickle- Down has been, not just a failure but it has been the major vehicle responsible for the most massive redistribution of wealth, from the population that has worked toward something, to those that wanted everything. Never has there been such a near total transfer of wealth in the history of the planet. This criminal-conspiracy has done what it was created to do ­ and it must be terminated with extreme prejudice, immediately, if we are to survive.
 
When 'Trickle-Down' was the political-priority of the day, the high-point in prosperity was to become a 'Millionaire.' Forbes magazine tracked those lucky few very carefully. Today Forbes 500 no longer bothers with 'millionaires' because there are just far too many of them-they have become inconsequential. Thanks to "Trickle-Down economics today the heavy-hitters financially are 'Billionaires' and above: which is all you need to know about how well this hostile-takeover of the American economy has worked.
 
The problem that this transfer of wealth has created has resulted in the Federalization-of-Privatization: As a result we are all facing another huge round of trickle-down economics, but this time it's being cloaked in a series of stealth-protected measures. These new tactics are commonly called BAILOUT or RESCUE packages, and nothing about their origins or their purposes has been made clear to those of us that will be forced to pay tens of trillions for our own destruction.
 
What's happening is this: First they used compromised laws to squash diversity and opinion within the entire field of communications, under Clinton and Powell's kid that ran the FCC. Together, competition was eliminated and monstrous empires were created that absorbed their competition outright. Once this happened, the entire edifice for total information management was in-place, using household names to lie to the public every minute of every day, whether on television or in print-with very few exceptions. With that completed effort it was easy to move directly onto the openly fascist path to WAR on a variety of fronts, supported and applauded by the very organs that were supposed to question whatever government does, on behalf of the people, as part of their constitutionally protected-jobs as so-called journalists. With the constitution gone, and the only allegiance worthy of that name having become the private for-profit motives that greed and arrogance breeds; in the sewers of those ruined lives where these so-called leaders "live," the current outcome is all that we should have ever expected from these new-age barbarians. We're still in the Twilight Zone; where Obama is just another man waiting to start a job, except that he seemingly can't wait to begin so he formulates their plans and then rushes to the nearest podium to expound upon the glories of what these programs (or pogroms) are pointedly designed to do; for them and 'to' us. And the sheep wait patiently to board the trains that will take them to the slaughterhouse.
 
The larger picture has or course remained hidden from the general public. What continues to go unnoticed is the number of profligate cities and towns, not to mention states that will have to be bailed out by the feds. Once this begins to happen, 'the rights' of states will disappear completely along with any independence from the federal-government. Remember the formula upon which bailouts are based: The crucial money provided is conditioned upon a federal "ownership stake" in everything that needs the money, and when this is applied to the states then all they have left to trade with is their broken-economies and their people who shall both become the property of the federal government that is today a private-corporation that serves only the privately-owned central banks and by extension the multi-national corporations. This is about to happen now to several states, including California; the sixth largest economy in the world. (2)
 
'BTW the "corporation" mentioned above has been bankrupt since 1933, and the result of that bankruptcy is that the USA went into receivership to the privately-owned Federal Reserve. The Dictator was correct when he said: "The constitution is just a goddamned piece of paper," he was actually telling the truth. It was probably the only truthful statement he ever made in nearly eight years.
The owners have simply allowed us to believe we have a constitution. Every law, code and statute world wide is based on the Uniform Commercial Code and has been in place since 1950. Of course no one in a position of power ever bothered to mention this to us did they? One must understand the UCC to understand how and why so many have gotten away with so much: And now they are upping the ante, to take it all.'
 
This explains why every courtroom and every government building has flags hanging that really are not American flags even though they appear to be. Each of them has gold/yellow fringe around them. They give us smoke and mirrors that mask what they created, which allows them to continue to say 'we have a constitution and a democracy.' Of course America was created to be a constitutional republic, not a democracy. There is a huge difference between a democracy and a constitutional republic. The rights of the few and the many, can only be protected under a Republic, while under a democracy, the majority rules-absolutely.
 
There are however a few places that are still holding out against the one-world-order and the New Barbarians. Among these are Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, parts of Pakistan, possibly Iran and certainly Greece.
"Socialist leader George Papandreou called for early elections, saying the conservative government could no longer defend the public from rioters.
 
The government has a single-seat majority in the 300-member Parliament and opposition parties blame hands-off policing for encouraging the worst rioting the country has seen in decades.
 
'The government cannot handle this crisis and has lost the trust of the Greek people,' Papandreou said. 'The best thing it can do is resign and let the people find a solution ... we will protect the public.'" (3)
 
If America is to survive then we must stop this wholesale giveaway of everything that was once part of this society. The relationship between profits and earnings must be freed from the stranglehold that management has created in order to siphon off all the profits and wreck the companies they work for. In addition, the idea that government can function in any capacity as a major stakeholder in any form of private enterprise beggars the imagination far beyond any real possibility for saving anything; except the criminals and their enterprises that created this "crisis" in the first place. The 'economy' must be based on a bottom-up profit motive, based on the real wages of those that create the wealth for those at the top - and not upon the insanity that it is now! People must come first, and the corporations must be controlled at every level by the public!
 
There is no longer anything like responsibility anywhere in government or the private sector to anything except what can continue to be stolen, either by flawed and fraudulent bailouts, or through the strong-arm tactics that are currently acting "under- cover of law" and that are neither legal nor functional. Obama in this venue is neither a savior, nor a friend to the people that supposedly 'elected' him-he is just the instrument of the new global-government engine designed to finish the job and to close down this nation, once and for all! Americans need to watch what happens in Greece and follow their example, if there is to be an America to fight over in the future.
 
In the meanwhile, here is some of what's happened here already.

Utilities-waste- nursing homes, and even the people's water (once in local control) is open to the highest bidder or those with the most influence. In "public private partnerships or privatization" (despite the lofty high pitch sales rhetoric) means only one thing, a plundering of the people's money. Profits take precedence over any and all health or environmental concerns. It's pigs at the trough time, locally- state wise and nationally. This is not just happening in one or two isolated places but across the nation. Because we are narrowly focused (many times only one newspaper) parochially; we have little to no idea of the larger picture and what is being set in place.
 
As I read of various happenings across the nation; I am struck with the usage of terms and language being introduced into the public arena; with no explanation as to their meaning (if any). I asked a state politician a few years back what this terminology we're hearing lately of, "regional or regionalization" meant? He brushed the whole thing aside as inconsequential and told me that is was of no importance. Obviously, for me, that was an unsatisfactory answer. Most especially, since on the local level, I could see that it meant a great deal. It appeared to me, that ever so insidiously, local control was gradually being usurped by "regional" control of unelected officials. Consultants (strangers) were replacing local people in places of city government (at lucrative salaries). The sense of community (calling city hall etc.) was being replaced by various business entities, having little to no attachment to the heartbeat of the people. How could they, being strangers, with no sense of native pride or concern? Words like "regional, stake holder, empowerment zones, enterprise committees, visioning councils, smart growth, sustainable development etc;" had replaced understandable language! I didn't imagine that the usage of these terms across the nation (if you look) meant "nothing"." (4)
 
It's 'Closing Time' America, because unless you begin to do more than just watch, this place won't even be a footnote to the ruin that is planned for these people and this place that once held so much promise for everyone.

Personally don't think she is qualified but, more importantly.....
as a mother, my biggest concern would be for her children. Most former presidents children were closer to adulthood and didn't really have much of a life because of their father's political position.

I can't even imagine what life would be like for these young children. Learning at such a young age to be paranoid about everything and everyone around you because your parent may be a target for some sinister plot, which then makes the children a target.

Next issue, motherhood. Again, she has young children. Who is going to be their mother while she is consumed with political dealings? They need their mother.

If she has aspirations for a larger role in the United States government, fine but she should finish the job she started first and raise her children.

And... I personally think that the rumors about the baby are terrible. The girl is 16. So what if it was HER baby and not her mother's.

If it IS true, her parents were probably only trying to protect their daughter.

Is this what you are suggesting because I do believe some of SP's children are older than Obama's and yet no one seems to be spatting about him leaving his children to run for president.  Of SP's 5 children....only 2 are younger....which is the same number of young children Obama has.  Yet it seems to be okay with everything that he just let Michelle Obama raise their children while he runs around the country to be prez.  Why is it not acceptable that Todd Palin take care of the two younger children while his wife tries to make this country better....including for her children.  Why....because Todd is the dad and he should be out working while SP stay at home cooking, cleaning, taking care of the kids.........seriously....who time warped us back to the 50s?

the Katrina victims at that point? Looks like I need to go to the senate site and see what Biden and Obama felt was so important they had to vote for the bridge.

People WERE suffering from Katrina and they had a chance to vote for it. They chose not to. Where does integrity come in? Where is country first, party second? What was so all-fired important they voted FOR a huge earmark for a bridge and against help for Katrina victims?

As as for pork...it is added by BOTH parties and that is what McCain/Palin seek to stop. Plus earmarks for personal gain...like Obama earmarking a million bucks for his wive's employer...who had just that month DOUBLED her salary.

Face it...Obama is old Washington politics, just like Biden is. There is no change there. Same old washington politics. He has demonstrated throughout his career. Yes, other politicians do it. That is exactly what I am talking about.

It is time it stopped, and the only people who have ANY history of bucking their own party to do that are McCain/Palin. Now THERE is change you can believe in.
Well, I think it is more important when the man...
running on the ticket with you only a few months ago voiced the opinion that you were not qualified for the job...however...in a strict changing your story view, yes. Weighing the importance of the two issues (lipstick on a pig and your #2 saying you were not qualified for the job) is up to the reader.
How is this not important?
I know that, on the surface, it's really easy to write this off as a nonissue. But I would ask that, regardless of party, everyone stop for a moment and consider what it MEANS.

It means that a make-up artist was more important to the McCain campaign than any other adviser or staff member. It's representative of shallowness and wasteful excess. It shows clear skewed judgment in what's important in our nation.

And, frankly, it was clearly wasteful expenditure. Palin looked perfectly fine before the excessive celebrity life the campaign brought to her. There was no need for this. She's an attractive woman, and absolutely not in need of this Paris Hilton-esque extravagance.

Why the campaign and RNC thought it would make her more "popular" is pretty head-scratching. Instead, they just made themselves look like, well, the type of people who aren't really "for" the middle class after all. The type of people who think style is more important than substance.

If Bush is not tried for his crimes, it sets a precedence for successive abuse of power....even for Obama.  As a country, until we acknowledge and correct our shortcomings we cannot move forward.  What do you think the rest of the world will say if we don't do something about it?  We talk alot about justice and being fair, but until we can show that we are willing to uphold those ideals we are no better than the ones who would commit those crimes.


The economy is the focus right now, and yes, it should be dealt with first and foremost, and that is being done.  But that is not to say that we cannot accomplish other things at the same time.  If they do go after Bush, all Obama has to do is step aside and not stop the preceedings.  This is all about the judicial branch of government, not the White House.

As far as things changing over time.....it seems that things have to change as new information is brought to light.  Ask Colin Powell.  We have to adapt and change with this new information.

As far as Tenet's slam-dunk comment, the people at that meeting were Bush, Cheney, and CIA-director John McLaughlin.....oh, and you.  Couldn't find any female names mentioned in that meeting, however.


As far as the 747 fuselage in the desert....could only find a handful of references to it on the whole internet and none were compelling and again, most were from far right wing publications.


I feel a story is only as truthful as its source and sometimes the truthfulness of a story can never be completely determined.  You say the source doesn't matter, I say it is EVERYTHING.  Reflect upon North Korea today, former communist Russia and China even today....all highly censored government news sources. Those folks will never get the real story and heaven knows it's hard enough to get it in a free country like the US.

Obama is described as “eloquent and dazzling. In writing, he sounds like the candidate for class president pledging no more homework and free pizza”.  – (pretty good description I'd say)


His position on Iran – “If Iran continues its troubling behavior, we will step up our economic pressure and political isolation”.  – That, that’ll show them.


While other candidates have insisted that we should threaten to drop nuclear bombs on terrorist training camps, Obama believes that we must talk openly about nuclear weapons – because “the best way to keep America safe is not to threaten terrorists with nuclear weapons”.  Obama will secure all loose nuclear materials in the world within four years.  “This will deny terrorists the ability to steal or buy loose nuclear material”. – Does he really believe the most vicious people will be thwarted that easily?


People should remember that no matter how eloquently offered it is not always for the better.

I guess I think it's important to know his history.
In my case, that means a lot to me, even when people say things I agree with.  Besides, a famous man once said A litany of complaints is not a plan.  I believe most Americans want us out of Iraq.  I don't believe a precipitous withdrawal will be to the benefit of anyone.  None of us wants to see those men (not boys, as Phil says.  That's an insult to these men and women who are all enlisted voluntarily.) and women harmed.  The idealouge is definitely diametrically opposed.  Some mouthpieces are just better to hear it from than Phil Donahue.  As Bernard Goldberg said of Phil in 100 People Who are Screwing up America, Phil Donahue made the world safe for emotion masquerading as thought.  His first guest on his first show was Madalyn O'Hair (very appropo, since he is himself an atheist).  Bernard says in his book that his show was so fresh that no one stopped to realize how far, even for a liberal, his ideas were from the mainstream.  But mainly what he did, in show after show, year after year, was give tremendous exposure, and his own strong support, to the forces challenging traditional beliefs and behavior.  Phil was the champion of the it's not your fault, blame society way of thinking.  His shows centered around this way of thinking.  His virulent hatred for authority extended to anyone in positions of authority, including police, for whom he had an especial loathing.  Yes, we will have to agree to disagree.

When you dial into a phone line you've just given up your right to privacy. You are not guaranteed privacy on phone lines owned by private companies. There is no privacy contract of any sort when you dial a phone. That's where the disconnect lies. Pardon the pun.

If that is true then why did she campaign so hard to try to get him to endorse her?  Why did she immediately after he dropped out of the race change her tone and try to mimick him.  You know for a fact if he endorsed her she would be making this out to be the greatest victory in America.


The fact is this IS an important endorsement.  As important as AL Gore's will be and as important as Bush's endorsement to the republicans.


She's just upset that it took away the limelight of her win in W.Virginia, which I believe was not as big as a win in Iowa, Washington State, Maine and other bigger states.  Now they said that because Obama didn't win WV there is no way he'll win the election in November?....yeah right.  Funny how they are completely missing all his big wins.  Of course they are trying to spin it as if all of his wins are not important...only the ones she won.  Brother give me a break!

When making up your mind remember that when a town hall participant said we needed to restart the draft, McCain said he did not disagree.  Why a draft if the war is being resolved and no other ones in the works?  Also, McCain wants to privitize Social Security.  Bush did his best to get that begun, and the country resoundly said thanks, no thanks. Wall Street disasters like oil speulators, Enron and Fannie Mae surely are enough to give a thinking voter pause when it comes to turning over your future retirement to those on Wall Street


 


 

You make an important observation.
The "arrogance" and "elite" accusations are tactics used ad nauseum in the absence of direct debate on issues, when trying to avoid confronting talking points that have been raised and when trying to run from fact and valid observations/opinions. Usually these accusations are made by folks whose own fund of knowledge is limited on the issues at hand and who are not inspired to research to broaden their own fact base in rebuttal.

This is when the accusations surface and attitudes are substituted for intelligent discourse. You are right. The confusion you describe and accusations of this nature are typically leveled against Obama, who does display confidence, intelligence, substance and ability to lead, which unnerves his detractors and send them into fits and tantrums.

THE FACTS: McCain's phrasing exaggerates both of these claims. Palin is governor of a state that ranks second nationally in crude oil production, but she's no more "responsible" for that resource than President Bush was when he was governor of Texas, another oil-producing state. In fact, her primary power is the ability to tax oil, which she did in concert with the Alaska Legislature. And where McCain called Alaska the largest state in America, he could as easily have called it the 47th largest state — by population. 

REBUTTAL:  She is responsible for negotiating any drilling of those resources. "Primary power" may be taxation, but she also has to oversee environmental issues, etc. She cracked the monopoly and forced oil companies to bid again, and she made a necessary portion of the bid that they address environmental issues. That was left out of the FACTS. While the population of the state may not be in proportion to the size of the state, her latest approval rating is 86%. That is unheard of. None of the other candidates enjoy that as senators from their respective states. That was also left out of the FACTS.

THE FACTS: While governors are in charge of their state guard units, that authority ends whenever those units are called to actual military service. When guard units are deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, for example, they assume those duties under "federal status," which means they report to the Defense Department, not their governors. Alaska's national guard units have a total of about 4,200 personnel, among the smallest of state guard organizations.

REBUTTAL: When the National Guard is called up within a state, the governor does have the primary responsibility of mobilization and oversight. Since she is 50 miles from Russia, having control of the National Guard in that state is certainly central to our national security. And the operative word is AFTER the unit is deployed. Making the decision to call them up and send them to war IS her decision, and DOES affect national security.

THE FACTS: A Back-to-the-Future moment. George W. Bush, a conservative Republican, has been president for nearly eight years. And until last year, Republicans controlled Congress. Only since January of 2007 have Democrats have been in charge of the House and Senate.

REBUTTAL:  This is true. But if Democrats truly believe in hope and change, they have had since January to actually do it. Have seen zip, zilch, nada. Got news for you...Bush is not a true conservative, especially fiscally obviously. McCain is.

THE FACTS: It's true that Obama voted "present" dozens of times, among the thousands of votes he cast in an eight-year span in Springfield. Illinois lawmakers commonly vote that way on a variety of issues for technical, legal or strategic reasons. Obama, for instance, voted "present" on some abortion measures to encourage wavering legislators to do the same instead of voting "yes." Their "present" votes had the same effect as "no" votes and helped defeat the bills. Voting this way also can be a way to duck a difficult issue, although that's difficult to prove.

REBUTTAL:  Bottom line, he still voted "present." If he can't make a decision on those bills, he is going to be able to make the big ones to run the country? You can't vote present in the oval office. However, he did show up to vote NO to the Infants Born Alive act...twice.

THE FACTS: The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama's plan would increase after-tax income for middle-income taxpayers by about 5 percent by 2012, or nearly $2,200 annually. McCain's plan, which cuts taxes across all income levels, would raise after tax-income for middle-income taxpayers by 3 percent, the center concluded.



Obama would provide $80 billion in tax breaks, mainly for poor workers and the elderly, including tripling the Earned Income Tax Credit for minimum-wage workers and higher credits for larger families.



He also would raise income taxes, capital gains and dividend taxes on the wealthiest. He would raise payroll taxes on taxpayers with incomes over $250,000, and he would raise corporate taxes. Small businesses that make more than $250,000 a year would see taxes rise.

REBUTTAL: Look at this and digest it. First paragraph...Obama's plan will raise income for middle income taxpayers by 5% by 2012...he does not define "middle class." McCain's plan is going to CUT taxes across ALL levels and still raise the "middle income" by 3%. I think I will take the tax cut and the 3%. No brainer.

Obama wants to provide 80 billion in tax breaks to people who already pay almost 0 taxes. Where, pray tell, is that $80 billion going to come from?? Taxing the "rich" which will trickle down to loss of jobs and depression of the economy. Won't work. Never works. Case in point..small businesses that make more than $250,000 would see taxes rise. That is about every small family business in this country, who employ a lot of people. Just throw them all under the bus in order to cut taxes for people who pay the least taxes of all of us ANYWAY.

A VISITING minister from Africa (y'know, where Obama's father is from?) has CULTURAL beliefs which differ from western culture and in asking for God's blessing and protection he incorporated that word from his CULTURE.

Obama and Biden have what, 35-36 years in the senate between them, a Dem majority for the past 2 years, congressional record full of JOhn McCain and yes, the Bush admin, warning of this very financial crisis...where the heck did experience get us...??? In one mell of a hess. I am ready for a little INexperience in Washington politics as usual. That is the LAST thing we need.
There are more important people you need to focus on
I know you really enjoy any information you find that you think will favor her poorly, but you should focus more of your time on the people in the DC crowd. There are some really bad people in office who make decisions that affect our every day life. People like Pelosi, Reid, Franks, Clinton, especially Obama, the people in charge of homeland security, the Patriot act (which by the way when Obama was running he said he'd do away or revise, but now he is increasing its power ever more). These are the issues that affect our lives, taxes, loss of jobs, loss of housing, etc.

It would do you a world of good to get off of the Palin bashing and focus on issues that affect us. Nobody cares about Sarah Palin anymore, her daugter, future son-in-law or any of that. It doesn't affect our lives.

Funny how you will focus on her, but you say squat about all the other governors that are doing crooked deals. And believe me there any way many more than this trivial stuff about Gov. Palin. If you focus on Chicago/Ill alone you will have enough corruptness to keep you busy til the next election. I know you don't like Palin, and search as hard as you can trying to find one single thing wrong and then pick and pick at it, but the dems need to let her be and live her own live. If she decided to run again in the future then you can trash her and all the reporters and news crew will destroy her life like they did this past election, but for now just give it a rest.

The running mate will be an important factor
I think McCain really needs a good running mate. I really liked Tancreda when he was running. A lot of my viewpoints aligned with his. I also like Ron Paul or Colin Powell (not sure if Powell is Dem or Rep), so if he picks a decent running mate who is "on the ball" about foreign and domestic issues (I think McCain is going to need all the help he can get) he may stand a good chance of winning, otherwise it's going to be hard to know who they will choose to be president.

Reality of Homelessness! Important Read!
I don't know what world you live in, but I see people with torn filthy clothes and holes in their shoes, who haven't bathed in months, lined up on the lawn of City Hall hoping to get a decent meal. They line up in the park on certain days to get sandwiches and a soft drink. Most of these people have mental illnesses and are unable to care for themselves. They were tossed out onto the streets when the government cut social programs and got rid of the mental institutions that were caring for them. They sleep behind bushes, sleep in sewer holes, and sneak into garages to get out of the rain. We have actually found dead bodies of homeless people in the garage of our apartment building! It is absolutely heartbreaking! By the way, this is in a neighborhood where 2-bedroom condos can sell for as much as $4,000,000 each! You can pay $4,000,000 for a condo, but there will be mentally ill homeless people sleeping in your bushes at night. They wander the streets aimlessly day and night. They stand on corners and yell unintelligible gibberish at people and cars as they go by. They are confused, frightened, angry, constantly in danger, and obviously mentally ill. I see it every single day, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Now, you tell me that our government is giving too much to the poor! At least 1/3 of these homeless people are women, which makes breaks my heart even more. I have personally tried to give them clothing, money, toiletries, and help in any way possible, but sometimes they don't even understand that I am trying to help them. Tell me again that our Country is doing all it can for the poor lost souls that need community programs to help them survive! I am so sick of all you whining suburban I-gave-a-donation-at-church people who have no idea what it truly means to be homeless. Flame me if you want...I speak the truth!

President's Radio Address




THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. This is an extraordinary period for America's economy. Many Americans are anxious about their finances and their future. On Wednesday, I spoke to the Nation, and thanked Congress for working with my Administration to address the instability in our financial system. On Thursday, I hosted Senator McCain, Senator Obama, and congressional leaders from both parties at the White House to discuss the urgency of passing a bipartisan rescue package for our economy.

The problems in our economy are extremely complex, but at their core is uncertainty over "mortgage-backed securities." Many of these financial assets relate to home mortgages that have lost value during the housing decline. In turn, the banks holding these assets have restricted credit, and businesses and consumers have found it more difficult to obtain affordable loans. As a result, our entire economy is in danger. So I proposed that the Federal government reduce the risk posed by these troubled assets, and supply urgently needed money to help banks and other financial institutions avoid collapse and resume lending.

I know many of you listening this morning are frustrated with the situation. You make sacrifices every day to meet your mortgage payments and keep up with your bills. When the government asks you to pay for mistakes on Wall Street, it does not seem fair. And I understand that. And if it were possible to let every irresponsible firm on Wall Street fail without affecting you and your family, I would do it. But that is not possible. The failure of the financial system would mean financial hardship for many of you.

The failure of the financial system would cause banks to stop lending money to one another and to businesses and consumers. That would make it harder for you to take out a loan or borrow money to expand a business. The result would be less economic growth and more American jobs lost. And that would put our economy on the path toward a deep and painful recession.

The rescue effort we're negotiating is not aimed at Wall Street -- it is aimed at your street. And there is now widespread agreement on the major principles. We must free up the flow of credit to consumers and businesses by reducing the risk posed by troubled assets. We must ensure that taxpayers are protected, that failed executives do not receive a windfall from your tax dollars, and that there is a bipartisan board to oversee these efforts.

Under the proposal my Administration sent to Congress, the government would spend up to $700 billion to buy troubled assets from banks and other financial institutions. I know many Americans understand the urgency of this action, but are concerned about such a high price tag. Well, let me address this directly:

The final cost of this plan will be far less than $700 billion. And here's why: As fear and uncertainty have gripped the market for mortgage-related assets, their price has dropped sharply. Yet many of these assets still have significant underlying value, because the vast majority of people will eventually pay off their mortgages. In other words, many of the assets the government would buy are likely to go up in price over time. This means that the government will be able to recoup much, if not all, of the original expenditure.

Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle have contributed constructive proposals that have improved this plan. I appreciate the efforts of House and Senate Democratic and Republican leaders to bring a spirit of bipartisan cooperation to these discussions. Our Nation's economic well-being is an issue that transcends partisanship. Republicans and Democrats must continue to address it together. And I am confident that we will pass a bill to protect the financial security of every American very soon.
