No, not at all, plenty of people with accents, not all sound dopey.

There are plenty of QA people that have no business being QA.

Definitely military time has no colon!

Here is what our company does that works great!  We bcc:  the entire QA staff and supervisors any feedback we give the MTs.  That way if we see something that is incorrect, we can say something about it to the QA person.  We all have a very good rapport so no offense is taken hopefully.  We usually provide a reference to anything we see that might be incorrectly given to the MT.  This allows QA to know what is being told to the MTs.  This also means less differences in feedback is given to the MTs and that means a lot to the MTs.  The biggest complaint I know is the fact that QA staff give different feedback and it is essential that QA stay on the same page.

If more companies adopted this policy, I believe we would have happier MTs!

I read all of them as D for DOPEY!
Me either. They just look and sound like regular people to me.
I think the story might be getting a lot of attention because of the situation - cute teenager lost while on a trip in an exotic place . . . . .
Geez, you people make it sound like
"my family" has a bunch of incestuous perverts running around.  Give it a break!  My kids never even started it, the other kids at school did.  ALL boys think it's funny to overexaggerate when they get hit in the privates.  It's not like they're walking around playing doctor or anything.  It's the rolling around on the ground, Oh! my privates! that they think is funny.  As if your sons, brothers, or whoever is going to tell you about it anyway.  You're overthinking it and turning it into something it's not.  I did say I do not tolerate it or find it funny.  I am a darn good parent and I don't trash talk my kids' teachers either.  I've never pulled them out of classes or switched schools.  So please, spare ME the lectures and get out of your little glass houses.
some people need to make themselves sound important
Obviously this person who considers MT a "profession" is in denial and has low, if any, expectations for herself.
Accents - sm
Just wondering - do you southern MTs have as much trouble with northern accents as I do with southern accents?  They sure take some getting use to; no disrespect intended, but some words are pronouced so differently that I have to listen several times to get them.  I suppose I'll adjust eventually - I hope!!
YES! we do, I'm from Texas.
to JWJ on accents
You are SO RIGHT. I do a LOT of ESLs and I rarely have problems just because of what you said - think with an accent and pay attention to where you are in the report. If you can't beat 'em - join 'em. When you are done, you can go back to your real thinking but in the meantime, think like them.
White males who make long, convoluted sentences with improper sentence structure.
southern accents
Being a Yankee who now lives in the south, I can relate! Had far more trouble with the southern dictators than with the foreign ones.
And yest, those British & Australian ones are sexy!
Spanish accents. sm
I worked on an account out of San Diego once, heavily thick Spanish (Mexican), brilliant docs, but very difficult.  I work on an account in FL now, still Spanish but Cuban and very, very different.  Those of you who say you don't do accents, try another field.  This job is all about dialects and learning and hanging in there.  If you are pompous enough to say, "you don't do this or that", bet your pay reflects it.

Clarification:  You probably still make good $$$$ if you are the perpetual cherry picker.  I hate cherry pickers, that is cheating, lying and stealing.  Most managers even those Rhit sort of people, do not realize how much cherry picking hits those of us in the pocket who do any job assigned.  I hope all cherry pickers rot in hello.
No accents/ESL. PERIOD!

Okay, I have a confession... I cannot understand accents.  Period.  So, when going to see a new physician, etc., I make sure to ask right off the bat whether the doctor speaks clear English, and if the answer is no, then I tell them that I am sorry for wasting their time and I go to the next doctor.

Just the same, when I was being considered for the accounts I have now, I told the lady I work for that I cannot do heavy accents or ESL doctors.  I know - - could have kept me out of work, but you know what?  I don't need the money that bad, because I would just be spending it on psych meds because trying to do the work would make me crazy!

I know you can learn accents

Ever wish you could take your post back after more thought?  I spent alot of time thinking about this topic of ESL/accent/ignorant dictators, and I guess I would like to clarify now.

I understand that if you listen to the same dictator or dialect repeatedly, you learn to understand it, and there are several that I have become quite familiar with.  But, my point was that for the $2.00 +/- per page that I get paid, I choose to listen to someone who is willing to take the time to speak with courtesy and clarity into the microphone.  I understand that at some point I may not have the choice, but while I do, I choose to work for someone who gives what they expect.  They expect clear reports, I expect clear dictation.  And they get paid ALOT more than I do to hold up their end of the bargain.

On the same token, for the hundreds of dollars that I pay out in medical expenses every year, I choose to give that money to someone I can understand and that I am relatively sure understands me, without the language barrier.  I don't want to chance a compromise in care because of a misunderstanding in communication; there are enough other things that can cause a compromise in care.

The medical language is hard enough when everyone is speaking the same language, with all the sound-alike words and similiar words, etc.  I don't want to confuse it even more with any extra variations.  I know it is here to stay, but I want to stay under my rock as long as I can.

Hope I haven't I haven't worsened my "foot-in-mouth" disease, or made anyone else even more upset...

I'd estimate about 200+ - all accents
worst accents

I agree with the person who said not really an accent.   Those who chew, yawn and dictate while falling asleep are the worst.   the only Hispanic I ever worked for was very precise and even said comma, period etc. his words were very distinct but some of his pronunciation was difficult but once becoming accustomed to that it was no problem.

Vent on accents. SM
Why oh why does a doctor who has been in the United States practicing medicine for over 20 years continue to have the same thick accent and poor grasp of the English language, as well as inability to grasp proper grammar and punctuation. It's like they do not even attempt to lose the accent. I understand young foreign doctors who have not been here long and are struggling to deal with language barriers, their residency, etc., but these older docs who I know have been around for a long time, drive me insane. I would in no way, shape, or form see them for my medical care, if they have made no effort to improve communication with their U.S. patients. Hello, what country are we in here? Thanks for listening to my vent.
vent on accents
I think most of the larger Medical Schools do offer the remedial courses, at least the 2 I worked for did, in fact, it was required for all foreign docs at first. Just wish that all ESL docs would take advantage of it.
I prefer non-Southern accents

I'm from the south but lived out of the area for several years.  My favorite accents are Northeast and MidWest.  For a while I did MT for a hospital in rural Alabama where a resident from Cuba was working.  He had acquired a number of southern altruisms that cracked me up with his thick Hispanic accent.  I'll never forget when he treated an elderly woman who had received a rattlesnack bite to her foot through her "teenie shoes."  (if I hadn't been from the south, I wouldn't have known he was referring to "tennis shoes!")

Once my dryer needed servicing and the repair man came out.  After talking for a while I asked if he was from somewhere near southern Russia because of his accent.  He got so excited that someone knew the geographic area of his origin!  He was from a tiny little country bordering southern Russia!  (one of my neurologists was from Russia).  I love to try to place someone's accents

I have a bad time with southern accents too
Their words just sort of fall into one another and it seems like they put emphasis on the wrong part of the word, so I need to concentrate with them.  The worst however is the Chinese accent by far.  Especially when they do try to slow down and enunciate, it makes it worse.
middle eastern accents
I had one yesterday for that sang and hummed most of the report. He dictated in a sing-song voice that made me think he was casting some sort of spell. In between words and sentences he would say, ahhhh, ummmmmmm, and then speed ahead with the sing-song again. And it was all in a middle-eastern accent. It was an extra long report and awful. I was so jittery by the time I finally finished.
anyone else think British accents are sometimes difficult?

There are few doctors with British or Australian accents compared to Indian, Middle Eastern, Hispanic, East Asian etc....but perhaps because I don't hear them as often I am sometimes really thrown off by them..  not ESL! But I find myself relistening before I get some of the words.   Also difficult are some of the other European dictators...do not get as many of those either. Used to get a guy - I looked him up on the hospital web site - it said he spoke about 6 different European languages - he had a very unusual accent.

No, not for me! I love European accents
and do well with them. However, the middle eastern accents throw me. There's something about the tone or pitch that I simply can't hear. Maybe I have a deaf spot or something. It's caused problems at jobs because MT employers think I'm "refusing" to do those work types when it's actually a hearing problem. Some of the Hispanics are the same way. I can do Asian, French, German, Scandinavian, east coast, American Indian, southern, British, whatever, just not east Indian/Arabic accents.
I have as much trouble with southern (USA) accents (sm)
as I do with most ESLs!
My mom is from the south. Thanks to that I have no problem with southern accents. nm
Hope you're good with accents! sm

All customer service is outside of the US and I had a really tough time communicating with them.  Also if you choose to discontinue early there's a whopping $90 fee that's buried in the fine print.

I used Vonage with broadband satellite for 2 months and it disconnected frequently on me....my satellite has been stable for years with multiple platforms so I suspect Vonage is just not suited for satellite.  Just a heads up!

Accents (Kim Komando's Cool Site of the Day), 8/10

Always something interesting in Kim's world:

What's the worst part of it? Accents, research, TAT, etc.? Hope
if you live among trashy people, low income people, people w/o goals or direction,
content to just get by, you by default become a part of a group. "people" have decided to group trailer people as trash. that is because there are enough people in that group to earn the title and even if you aren't trash, you are categorized by others. did i think i was trash in lower class neighborhood surrounded by people who drank and fought all weekend? no but i knew i wasn't staying and did not try to pretend that all the fools in the neighborhood were just nice folks who ended up where they were because high horse snobs deemed their neighborhood low class. people for the most part live exactly where they belong because they don't want to educate themselves, they don't mind "trash" around them and they don't want to be bothered trying just a bit hard to extract themselves from that world. they justify everything to themselves i guess saying everyone who doesn't like their lifestyle is a snob and the comedians (Jeff Foxworthy/Chris Rock, etc) who make fun of them are just ill-informed.

As for me, I fought hard to get out and don't even want to look back. It amazes me people stay for generations.
Has anyone disconnected the internal sound card and replace with another sound card?

I am having problems with my sound on one of my computers.  Several different ExText program have been on it so I don't think it is the program and the sound is just now as clear as on my other computer.  Has anyone switched (disconnected the internal sound care and replaced) to a new sound card?  Did it make a difference.

Everyone on this board is so knowledgeable, I really appreciate you.  You have helped me many times.

You do sound FAT, but you don't sound RICh.
Go live in Iraq or something.
There are plenty of
dummies out there with degrees and certificates.  You can do a halfbutt job all the way through and still get a degree with a C average.
they have plenty
I know 2 people who are relatively new and they are being recruited for it.  It looks like they are putting people on it with very little experience since they are making less anyway.
i'm sure there must be plenty of those
there are also those who routinely accept Medicare assignment, write off balances, work 16 hour days, on call 7 days a week. Certainly there are national corporate executives obviously who are makin' it off the backs of MTs and, furthermore, we all try to increase our line counts using macros. But I say if her profit is so "out there" that she's feeling guilty about it by all means don't contribute to part of the problem thats wrong with America today which is general lack of morality. People who are simply trying to be honest and worry about what is right deserve to be heroes
There are plenty
of people who have gone through the legal process of becoming a US Citizen who are not US born. Yes, there are many MTs in the US who were born in India and are now US citizens who do MT work. There were several in my MT classes. I only use India as an example. There are many from several other overseas location who are now US citizens.
Yes they did. And there are plenty of

Same here. There are plenty of men
We have plenty here.
That is never going to happen. Ever. There will always be people here illegally. I'm just not going to hate them for it.
I can have plenty of fun without that freakshow.
I have plenty to say, such as, Take It To A Blog. nm
Plenty of work there.....
There is PLENTY of work at Amphion.  I'm not sure who has been saying that they overstaff, but there is more than enough work to go around.  In fact, right now there is overtime available, and they are in need of many more transcriptionists for new accounts.
Oh I "got" PLENTY. LOL. nm
I would think you should give them plenty of
...to find a replacement. Probably a couple of months. If they seem to be dragging their feet though, I would give them about four weeks. Just my thinking.... :)
There are plenty other companies out there...sm
You don't have to put up with this.  Read the boards closely and check out the Jobs Forum.  Best of luck to you.
I have plenty of friends...sm

that I know from different places, clubs included, but that doesn't mean that I'm having an affair with any of them...male or female! Before I was married my best friend and I went to a particular club to dance...it was great exercise and more fun than going to a gym. I made several friends there who are strictly friends. We were all single, enjoyed each other's company, and liked to dance...nothing nasty ever went on. In fact, many times my male friends made it easy to shake men whose attention I didn't want. Sometimes people go out just because it is more fun than watching TV. Hubby and I went to the club a couple of weeks ago and I introduced him to people that I knew there. I would hate to think that because I introduced him to people that he would think I'm having an affair. I don't know if I'd be more hurt because he didn't trust me, or because he thought I was dumb enough to take him someplace and introduce him to someone I would have an affair with!

I would also hate to think that my husband would search my cell phone and check the numbers he didn't recognize. My son is in the military and at times his friends have called because they consider me a second mom or are trying to get in touch with my son. Nevermind that just about everyone has had someone call their phone and it has been a wrong number!

If someone gave me a real reason to check up on them, I probably would, but to check up on someone 'just to be sure' is insulting. If someone I care about can't come to me and talk rationally about their fears, then we don't have much of a relationship!

and plenty want everything spoonfed to them...

no, plenty of jobs out there that
plus benefits. Keep looking.
I have plenty of bills to pay...
Hubby had open heart surgery and was off work during the busiest season last year. I now handle ALL the bills except his truck insurance and truck payment to the tune of at least $5000 a month and that doesn't include the $75,000 hospital bill that the insurance doesn't pay. I couldn't do that if I didn't stick to my guns. Sure, we're not in the best of shape right now, but we are scraping by with a little ingenuity and things will get better for us...but I surely will not work for peanuts, never have, and never will...and neither should you.

You have to prove you're worth it that extra $.01 or so,(ahem), but in reality, we really need to stick together. Fighting amongst ourselves doesn't solve the problem.
There are plenty of free ones out there.
You probably have some Spyware that has gotten on your computer. I run AVG constantly and then also run SUPERAntispyware Free Edition (Google it) and also Spybot Search and Destroy, each once a week. Between these 3, I seem to catch just about everything.
There are still plenty of companies
that value patient safety more than their greed and don't use that awful VR. Find a better company.
Post above is RIGHT ON. We have plenty sm
of people working here who type the most twisted garbage I've ever seen.  I have QA'd Indian work before and most of them have a better grasp than many of the people I see in my job list day after day.  My company isn't offshoring right now, but it wouldn't surprise me if they did.  Many of the worst MTs have more than 20 years in, can you believe that?  They've hidden themselves away, haven't kept up on the changes in transcription and they refuse to accept feedback and apply it.
