Work some holidays - don't really mind during the winter months, but

Posted By: IC here too on 2006-01-01

when summer rolls around, I am at the beach on the holidays and do not work them. As an IC, we get nothing extra as far as $$ just the extra work.

Can't complain - have plenty of work all of the time.

You mean they work OUR holidays. They just had a big one that lasted 5 days and WE had work for a w

You think Indians don't get sick?  They have to be constantly sick in that disgusting place.

I work holidays and I am an IC
dont blame it on that

I take my job very seriously and worked all Thanksgiving week, the day of, the day after, and will work all Christmas week, the night before, the day of, the night after, ETc etc etc

I value my job and I do a good job, it just sucks that there is no loyalty or respect for that from some companies.
I used to work all holidays but came
up with an idea that has worked for several years now. Even though I am on an account with only one other person, I was stuck with all the holidays. I now work Thanksgiving and have Christmas off. All the other holidays we take turns rotating. Good luck to you!
Are you getting extra for weekend work and holidays.
:
I always volunteer to work holidays, weekends, etc. because my husband is off
so he can watch the kids while I earn incentive and holiday pay.  Plus, I'm the one who has to cover so the childless women can go on cruises with their latest boyfriends or husbands, or they didn't show up for work because they met a guy at a bar and have the bottle flu.  Oh, poor you.  Life's unfair.  Suck it up and get over yourself.
Geesh! What's up with you people who refuse to work holidays?
Don't you think people get sick, have accidents, etc on holidays too? What about the doctors and nurses that have to work holidays? Did you forget about them too?

How about police officers, firemen, paramedics...

Do you think you are the ONLY people out there with family and would like to spend time with them during holidays? We would all love to do that but this chosen career requires some sacrifices.

If you can't give a little you should have never started doing this kind of work.
I would charge more per line for working holidays or if asked to work scheduled days off. SM
But did you address that in your contract?
nm would you mind if I asked where you work and what type of work hosp, clinic ?
x
Nope...MDI-MD...no work x 2 months!

Yes, but I did not work for almost 6 months during my daughter's chemo -sm
my income drastically tanked from late March through Sept. (I made about $300 a month in that time period), plus I have never worked FT for them (i.e. 90 minutes a day). I am now doing about 75 minutes a day though + an account of my own on the side now, so doing about $2K a month now. So I expect this year to be a bit higher in the income level. Only 1 person works FT for them as far as I know, most people are PT, its all IC so it really does not matter. But there is always work left over every day that wasn't farmed out to somebody to do.....and they are getting new doctors every day which is great I think.
Been trying to find steady MT work for 8 months now, at least
At first, no one would even respond. A few months ago I decided to take ANYTHING from anyone who actually did respond.

I'm used to getting paid 10 cents a line for the past 12 years, but when I did get a bite from a company, I took it, even at 7 cents and 8 cents because at that point I was STARVING and worried about making my house payments and paying my utility bills!

Now do you know what the problem is? All three frickin companies have very little to NO WORK available. This is consistent.

Now, at 7 and 8 cents a line and barely squeezing out any work between three DIFFERENT companies (even though they KNOW I am available to do any and all work they have), I am just about as bad off as I was before finding these jobs.

I know nothing else and have no college education, BUT I do know my job backwards and forwards, research skills, terminology, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology and everything else that goes with being a good, experienced MT.

Do you think I am getting paid for this experience? No. Times are bad right now, but they've been bad for me for many, many months. I just don't know what I'm going to do anymore. I rue the day I went to school for this godawful so-called profession.

Every day wake up, raring to go, hopeful there will be SOME kind of work available, at least to make $80 or $100 a day, AT LEAST.

But every day I end up stressing out, worrying, continuously being broken down because even though I'm a hard worker and a darn good MT, I am treated like low-class scum by my creditors because all my bills are late & I can't pick up the phone anymore due to bill collectors on my back. Believe me, I paid all my bills on time every time when the work was abundant and I WANT to pay my bills, but good intentions don't pay the bills. Neither does little to no work at a lame 7 or 8 cents a line.

I also have little food in the fridge or pantry, and things are beginning to be shut off left and right.

I don't know...

It's just extremely frustrating and stressful. I can't live like this anymore but have no way out.
1099 form? I did IC work for an MT company a few months (smsg)

in 2007.  Shouldn't I be receiving a 1099 form from them for tax purposes?  I haven't yet and am wondering if I should contact them.  I paid my quarterlies.  I thought the law was they had until 1/31 to send it.

NEVER MIND...IT DOES NOT WORK. nm
nm
I don't mind working some. When I work
weekends I'm not on a schedule and I don't usually do a full day, so it isn't too bad.  I don't mind working a rotation, but don't want to work every weekend, although I do get a differential for working weekends.
I work almost every weekend, but I don't mind so much. sm

I don't have a husband or kids, and I'd rather work and let others be off, if possible.   It would be different if I worked in an office every weekend, but somehow, working at home, it doesn't seem so bad.  I can get up early, get my work done, and have most of the day left if I want to do something.

Sorry that you're unhappy with it.  Just part of the business, I guess.

Would you mind sharing who you work for?
Please email me if you're not willing to post it.  Tx.
Which office do you work for if you dont mind.
:
what company do you work for if you dont mind saying?

I have not yet done it, but from what I hear its on the horizon.  To me it sounds wonderful, being able to free up your hands.  What do you find to be the biggest problem?  Are you losing money?  Does it cater to your own voice?  Do you have at least an option of typing the whole thing out or how do you do corrections?

Maybe you should just hang in there, unless you're really losing money.  From what i've heard, it takes months to master, but once you do, you'll be making double or even triple what you're making now.

I work every holiday -- don't really mind, but would be nice to have extra pay. sm

When I worked for YOG, we got holiday pay and weekend differential.  I guess those days are gone.  Now, I'm just expected to work every holiday and every weekend and smile and say thanks for letting me be your slave.

I should probably stay away from the boards today ... Guess I'm Bad Mood Betty!  (ha)

would you mind sharing how to get started with this type of work
typing insurance claims? Thanks
Don't mind extra work as long as it is not abusive
I used to always work my shift and then try to do 2-3 early Sunday mornings.  I was stopped from doing that because we could not work more than 40 hours.  If there is help needed after my 40 hours I certainly do not mind helping out when needed - as long as this does not become abusive and you are expected to be available 10, 12 or more hours a day, night, and weekends.  I have been there and it just got out of hand.  I am comfortable with less than 50 hours a week.
Mind is willing to work but legs and back aren't cooperating.
Any cures for MT body aches?
Well supposed to be working and GUESS WHAT NO WORK AGAIN AT AMHERST MQ. No doubt in my mind that
they could care less about the MT, if you make money or starve. These people are absolutely crazy. There is no doubt in my mind.
I also want a living wage for MTs. Don't mind hard work and longer hours, just want to be paid
:+
Just for giggles this winter sm
I used my electric potpourri pot with some liquid potpourri added to the water. I helped out tremendously while adding a nice scent to the air.  It didn't toss out white dust like my cheapie humidifier did and the noise of a running humidifier wasn't there either.  I also put bowls of water in front of the register in both winter and summer for a little humidity.
Winter wonderland in NH
I guess we are supposed to get about 10 inches.  Its awful to say this but I had no idea it was even going to snow, I've been so busy lately working and doing errands that I haven't watched TV.  It was a shock to me when my neighbor called and said the kids were getting out of school early today because of the weather, I looked out side and was like why, it wasn't even snowing :)  Oh well, its the start of my weekend so I guess I can't really complain...stay warm!
Nope, it's seasonal. Aug. 31 through winter.

YIKES!!!Got our oil contract for this winter and almost passed out!!!

Last year I paid $845 for  600 gal of oil with a 2 months to pay. Yesterday, I recieved our contract for this winter and it would cost $1517!!!!!

Guess who won't be taking the contract.  That's ridiculous. The country is going to go broke at this rate. They want $759 for 300 gallons. That takes us 3 months into the winter, but......where do they think the seniors  and others are going to get this money?

Guess old Mamma Bear is coming out of storage this year. Wood is no problem for us. We have a stockpile for the garage coal & wood stove and a friend that has 11 acres of woods he likes certain areas cleared every year.

I feel bad for others who have no access to another heating source.

Anybody go south for winter and continue working?

Hubby and I are thinking of going south for the first time this coming winter.  I've found some sublets with internet access, mostly wireless, one wired.  My work uses DocQScribe and internet based.   I use a desktop computer for work but have a laptop capable of the job.

Have any of you done this?  If so, what was your experience?  Any tips or precautions as far as wireless internet security?  At home we have a wired network with a hardware firewall/router so no experience with wireless.  I'm not high tech but not a complete novice either.

As for paying bills and accessing cash in a different locale, did you use online banking and ATMs or some other method?  I confess some hesitation about online banking even though most of my friends and neighbors have used it for years!

Thanks to anyone who can help.

We just signed up for our propane for winter.. It's gone up a dollar per gallon...
from last year.  There is no shortage of propane as far as I know.  They just raise the price because they can.  We're paying 1.89 per gallon.  Thank goodness we have 2 wood stoves, but I'm sure a cord of wood will double too. . You can't win.
Space heaters can be very expensive as I found out one winter
by just trying to heat my office and leaving the reest of house cold. The cost to use the space heater was more than the gas furnace would ahve been.
Ya know, winter doesn't officially start until tomorrow

And, I'm already tired of the cold,

tired of all the snow,

but my kids love it and I can't move.

Then consider the heat bill.....now I'm crying

Only during the summer. Wild colored toe socks in winter.
;-D
Your mind was in the gutter up there with sauteed stool, too. Would you please take your mind out of

I heard crickets til I realized it was winter. Was really the start of chronic
:=
i still use my fan even during fall/winter and turn it towards the wall but drowns out noises. nm
;
How are you planning to deal with the oncoming high winter heating bills?
I'll be bumping the thermostat back another degree or 2, down to whatever leveI I can  not be cold at.  Otherwise there will be less "fun" money spent if it has to go to the oil companies!
The HandEze gloves are nice w/the wrist support. I like them in the winter. Other brands to
s
I use regular thin winter gloves and cut the fingertips off. Works great! nm
:)
I want my bread crumbs white so I let them dry up in the open overnight (winter brings low humidity)
a very good way not to waste stale bread (aside from pudding).
$32K/part time 6 months/full time 6 months
I have kept my child home with me half the year, but when pre-K started I began working full time. Helps to only have a main account and one backup account for the 2nd year now, so my abbreviation program rocks and rolls when I focus.
Holidays
As an IC, can the company require you to work Thanksgiving and Christmas, I though IC set their own schedule?
Holidays
You would rather ruin their holiday than to tell what this man has done, I don't understand.  Do you really want your mother married to a man like this?  Your excused for putting your head in the sand and ignoring this situation I cannot comprehend.  If you had daughters and their stepfather was doing this to them would you not want to know?
Alone on the holidays
I spend most of my holidays alone. Since I'm divorced, and kids are grown and married they have to divide time between Mom, Dad, and in-laws (some in-laws are married, some are divorced). It just makes it all easier. I have Christmas with my kids a week before, or a week after, the important thing is we ALL respect each other's space.

I won't say its always easy being alone, but its ok. Sometimes I have the big "dinner" with my best friends family, sometimes not. Several times, I've thought about cooking the whole meal and inviting a homeless family or something, but so far, haven't done that (visitors traumatize my dogs, they rule the roost here).

One way or another, Thanksgiving and Christmas are about giving thanks in my book, we don't all have to sit in one room for that to happen. Also, its a good time to reflect and get to watch what you want on TV!!

One way or the other, I hope you (and anyone else who's alone for the holidays) find happiness and peace.

If you want turkey/ham and the fixin's, give me a call!! LOL
To alone for the holidays

If you mean COMPLETELY alone, there are probably some things you could do - and I don't mean transcribing!!!  Does your area have a meal for the homeless where you could volunteer?  What about at a nursing home, or maybe a childrens' hospital, or a hospice.  Check and see if you could bring baked goods, and spend time with people who don't have a choice about being alone.  Giving of yourself will make you feel great!

Holidays
Every business has rules about working holidays. If you are an employee, you have to follow the rules to keep the peace. Face it - we are medical workers, and hospitals and some offices like urgent cares stay open. I have put in many holiday hours myself, but usually the manager was flexible and could allow a few people to work 4 hours on either Christmas or Thanksgiving. You take turns. Now I work for an outpatient radiology office, and we close for holidays. With my sister in town, I was able to take off Wed, Thurs, Fri, and then the office was closed on Monday for Christmas. It's my first ever real Christmas vacation from work since 1983.
Holidays...
I've worked many of them for years and still do; in fact, now I volunteer for it. I'm second shift, which makes it easier all the way around, and it's and no big deal. I just get through my shift and tell myself it's just another night, which, frankly, it is. I know I'm truly not missing out on much of anything at this stage of my life and frankly, for holidays like xmass, I actually welcome having to go home and work my shift to get away from family, ha-ha. For my sake, the relatives fix it so we can all have a meal together, then I just go on home. Those nights are usually slow, but you do get through them.
Me too. Plus, sometimes those holidays are
very interesting. Unfortunately for the people who are sick or the accidents that happen, but Thanksgiving and Christmas are the ones where the trauma notes and regular notes seem more interesting. Anyway, for me, it is a good way to get away and tune out the loudness and extremeness of the holiday. Too much food, too much noise. Put the head phones on and either veg (waiting for reports) or type and make money.
Anyone getting "Hung For The Holidays?"
U know, by American Idol's bad singer William Hung?
me too! as if the holidays aren't
stressfull enough, throw in the slap in the face thing called a pay check to ice the cake! I'm looking for other avenues to take....
Happy holidays to you all! :)
